Budgie Talk???

Hi,

My friend's grandparents are giving me 2 budgies because they have to move to the retirement village (and are not allowed to keep budgies).....

I want to teach it how to talk but here are a few questions:

1. Does it HAVE to be a boy to learn how to talk?
2. If its old, will it learn how to talk still?

You can add some more information about finger/shoulder-training budgies or about teaching them how to talk.

Well theres a lot you need to know before a budgie will talk.

First of all, they have to trust you and have a bond with you to talk with you. A male will probablly talk where a female will probablly not...nor an older bonded male. They need to be healthy and comfortable to learn. Here are a few things you budgies will need...

1. A good diet. Seeds are not okay. Pellets and fresh veggies will help keep your bird healthy, and therfore more healthy and active. What do your budgies eat?

2. Space. A small cage will make a bird grumpy, depressed and irriatated. How big if your birds cage?

3. Entertainment. They need stimulation. That means different perches, toys, things to do. Rotate things a few times a year. Make sure they can make choices in food and toys and activities.

4. Companionship. If a budgie has another budgie friend, likley they will bond to it and not you, which means most likley not talk. However, a budgie on its own is a lonley budgie indeed without human contact.

I would work on finger training, not shoulder. Hold you hand inside the cage, patiently. Rest it on a perch for 10 minutes a few different times a day. You can offer millet from your hand. Just be patient, never chase him around. It will take time, but if you give time they will come around.

No,doesn't have to be male.
Females can talk as well.
(Keep in mind,some never learn to talk but are just as entertaining making sweet little tweeting sounds!)

Age doesn't matter either. I can see younger being easier to train,but thats not a necessity.

Well females usually aren't inclined to talk like males are, but of course it's possible, notice I said *probably*, which is true. A female probably will not talk, but it's possible. And an older budgie who has commonly been bonded to other birds as opposed to humans will be a lot harder to hand tame than a young budgie. Not impossible, again, but harder.
