Question

I am thinking of purchasing a sun conture

I have been thinking of adding a sun conture to my family, but I know nothing about them or owning any bird for that matter. I have been researching them for 6 months, but would love some info on owning birds from bird people themselves? Could any one help me? Is it bad to clip wings? Do they poo everywhere? How much time out do they need? I breed rabbits and used to rescue ferrets so I know that am respondible enough to care for them but thats the only thing I know.............Plz any info would be great!!!!!!!!!!

Sun Conures are beautiful little parrots. They can have a sweet personality and are often great birds. I've owned several.

That said, they (like many conures) have a particularly piercing scream. If noise does not bother you, that's great. Be aware that the times they will scream will be those you consider most inappropriate. Like when they want your attention because you are watching that silly TV, or sitting in front of the computer, or trying to have a conversation on the phone. Anytime you are not focused on them, is when they will want to get your attention.

Some birds get past this, some don't.

If you have the opportunity, try to spend some time with someone who has one. Get a feel for how loud and annoying they can be. Once you have the bird, it's pretty much too late then.

Other than that, ...and the noise can be a big deal for some folks, they are great birds.

As far as your other questions go, ....I ALWAYS clip wings. Life for a flighted bird can be short and painful. There are mirrors, windows, toilets, ceiling fans, stoves, hot frying pans, etc., that the bird can fly into. Not to mention how many people lose their beloved pet each year when it flies right out the door.

They poop when they have to poop. It will be where ever the bird happens to be at the time. On/in the cage, the floor, on you, on the table, the couch, ..wherever. Bird poop cleans up easily and I don't even think about it anymore. (...but then I clean up poop for a living hehe).

Reading the last bit of your post makes me want to tell you to not get a bird. If you ever plan to start rescuing ferrets again, I would never get birds. Ferrets are incredibly efficient predators. There is always the chance one could get out, or be unobserved for just a few minutes. That's more than enough time to catch and kill your bird. I try to never let predators and prey animals live in the same house. No real good can ever come of it.

You may be excellent at keeping everyone in their places, but we all make mistakes. When dealing with ferrets and birds, one mistake is all you're likely to get, ...and the bird pays the price.
