Hi and Welcome!
Can you clarify something .... Are you using the term loosely when you say two babies or is that to be taken literally.

Many of us here can help a great deal with respect to bringing new birds home. What we would advise would be different if these guys were unweaned babies versus weaned "adolescents" :-)

Just let us know and we'll go from there.

In the meantime, you can check out my website for various types of information. It can get you started.

They are 4 months old according to the man who sold them to me. im not sure if they are boys or girls. The one likes to hiss alot at me. But Im following my handbook which say by the second day get them accquainted with your hand like cage furniture perches. If I nudge her toes she will sit on hand, hesitantly anyway and once ina bit I can pet her tummy. The other bird isa bit avoiding so far. Im pretty sure they were not hand fed/tamed as most sellers claim. i dont think they were handled much at all yet, but Im taking my time. I named them Winnie (Winifred if it's a girl and Winston if it's a boy lol) So Winnie and Poky. Thanks for the link. ^_^

Hi Rainlily,

You are on the right track. If you keep working wioth your birds to get them to step up, you will be on a pathway that will be good for you and your "BABIES"

Cockatiels truly want to please and they learn very quickly once they get the idea that you are trying to convey.

One thing i would add to your "step up" training is the actual verbal command to Step Up. Each time you present your finger to your bird, use the command. I would also put my finger slightly higher on the bird when requesting a "step up". Some birds don't like their feet being touched too often and for birds like that, touching their feet to get them to step up slows down the progress of the training.

Touch the bird on his or her "tummy" so to speak. With Cockatiels, I find that a spot about 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches above the feet is best. You just place your finger against the birds body at that point and apply the slightest amount of pressure and the bird will walk right up onto your finger. Be sure to say Step Up when you place your finger there. These birds are remarkably smart. I've had tiels learn to step up in 20 minutes or less. Some on the other hand take more time. It is not because of the intelligence of the bird as no tiel is any less intelligent than another tiel. It is just that some personalities of some cockatiels are just a little more contrary. Parrots understand praise, so say Good baby or use the bird's name when you praise it. Give praise after each succesful step up.

They all learn well.

Try the different position of the "step Up" finger and I think that will go alot more smoohly. My guys will come to me hand at this point whether I ask them to or not. Eventually, you want that kind of reaction. The birds look at you as the big protector of the flock and they will come to you.

Again, read my website as I try to offer the answers to as many questions as I can as a part of the site. of course, there is always more to add.

Bill
PS: One of the best Cockatiel books I have ever read is written by Dianne Grindol.. It is one of those "Dummies" books withe the Yellow and Black covers . It is called "Cockatiels for Dummies" and it is Excellent.

If you have any questions I can help with , post them here although I answer gfaster if you email directly at foundinrolls@netscape.net

I write a column for a coin magazine that explains rare coins that can be found in rolls from banks.

I check that email address more often then I do the forums.

Have Fun,
Bill

I really appreciate the help and I've been reading your site alot. I seem to be having one big issue here though. The two birds are always fighting with each other for positions and so forth. I've imcluded enough perches and all to be shared but they still do it and if I distract them by petting their tummies they end up shoving each other ina apnic just when one was wanting to cooperate. Im nerbous to remove them just yet, in a towel or anything because I dont want to hurt them. Whjat can I do about all this bickering between the two especially if Im there?

Hi,
It is normal for one of the birds to want to take a dominant position. That's OK as long as neither bird actually hurts the other. Usually they will beak each other or make a little Hissy sound as "body language" to let the other bird know who's boss.

as I say, It's all OK if the birds are not hurting each other and they probably won't.

There is an outside chance that the bickering can progress to something more but it usually doesn't with cockatiels.

I need to get an idea of what size cage the two birds are in. If the cage is too small, the birds may not have enough room to separate from each other enough.

If the cage is not a good size for two cockatiels, then it may be wise to get a larger cage or have each bird in a separate cage. There is always the possibility that the two birds won't get along together. Again though, as long as the cage is large enough for the two birds, that shouldn't be an issue.

Measure the cage, tell me how many inches high it is, how wide it is and how deep it is.

Also, not to start an issue with the folks that believe in birds being flighted, are your birds wings clipped? They are a little easier to handle at this stage if the wings are clipped. It should be done by someone who knows what they are doing so if they are not clipped, don't try it on your own. It is not painful to the bird at all. It's like clipping our fingernails so to speak. It just makes some feathers shorter so the bird can't get much flight.

Anyway, lets start with the bickering issue and the size of the cage.

Thanks,
Bill

Thanks,
Bill

My cage is this one:
FERPLAST IBIZA OPEN BIRD CAGE - WHITE
Modern white wire bird cage, with a non-toxic, white plastic base. Large forward opening door with perch. Pull-out tray and fitments included. Dimensions: 49.5cm x 30cm x 69cm (19.4" x 11.8" x 29.1")

It's discouraging that I can't get them to come to me yet even with food and I think the the bird bickering is only hindering it more. *sigh* Well, Im trying. http://www.petcompany.co.uk/acatalog...Stands_32.html
