Parakeet

Hello everyone,

I guess I should explain the whole story....My parents had a parakeet, Mr. Bill, he was the sweetest little fella in the world. He got sick and my parents took him to an avian (spelling?) vet. The said he had an infection and they gave him an antibiotic, which my parents did give him religiously and they also said he was attracted to my mother and was spitting out this subtance at her as a sign of love and desire for her. I thought that was strange, but I guess it could be true, what do you think? A few weeks later, Mr Bill was flying around the house and they heard him make this awful noise and found him lying on the counter dead. His neck wasn't broken or anything. It was like he just dropped dead. Needless to say my parents were so sad. They have had a really hard time dealing with losing Mr. Bill. I wanted so badly to get them another parakeet, but they said nothing would replace him, he was just so much a part of their everyday lives.

So a few months after Mr. Bill had passed on a little girl came to the door holding a parakeet and said that her grandma told her if she wanted to get a kitty cat that she had to get rid of her bird. My mother was quite shocked to see this little girl holding a parakeet outside walking around the neighborhood trying to find it a home. So my mother took it from her because she did not want it to fly away and end up dead. The little girl told her it was raised around a cockateil (spelling?) Well they have tried to get warm and fuzzy with this bird, but it won't let them. It just wants to sit and talk to itself in the mirror and when it chirps, it chirps just like a cockateil really shrill and sharp. Is there anything to make this bird warm up to them and stop going crazy with the shrill & sharp chirping?

Thanks all.

i really dont know anything about birds.. but maybe taking away the mirror? i read up about parakeets once.. when i was beggin my mom to get me one years ago.. one of the sites said if you want your bird to bond with you, not to give it a mirror. cuz it thinks the bird in the mirror is another bird, so he doesnt need you as a friend if he has another birdie friend right there waiting for him when ever he wants to talk.

Awws no.Parakeets belong in a flock. Please don't keep a single bird. Reguritating (spelling) is usually a sign of affection yes. They "feed" their mates by spitting back up food. (It can sometimes be a sign of illness too,so if it don't seem "normal" definately check with a vet...an AViAN vet.Being the key word )

Would the shrill & sharp chirping be that he's trying to call out to another bird? I have both parakeets& a tiel.My budgie calmed down lots once I got another bird (the tiel I got for christmas,no they don't live together, but in the same room,my bedroom) & he'll also have a friend, another keet, after I introduce them in a month.
Quarantining & slow introduction is important to birds.
But please..PLEASE don't keep just one keet. They are flock birds.
