Red Tailed Hawk

Just thought I'd pop my head in and share some more pics. This is a juvinile Red Tailed Hawk. We had to pin his wing which would explane the wrap. He is such a lovely guy though.

Professional??? (looking around) Where??? LOL
It does put you more at ease with these kinds of animals when you can be trained. I have to say though I just got taloned in the face yesterday which was a friendly reminder to always pay attention 100% Good thing I was cause it could have been a really bad thing. I guess that's also part of what makes these birds so beautiful.

But beautiful doesn't mean safe was the lesson you seemed to have learned! In my head this Mom voice piped up "Becareful with this, you could poke an eye out with one of those..."

Now youwill be on your toes more around them probably right?

Ya, the talloning happened with a small screech owl though. Lucky for me. They are a bit harder to hold on to with leather gloves. (unless they're jessed) With the larger birds there's just more bird to hold on to. It does get a little more complicated with my job though because we are treating these large birds medically. Sooo sometimes no matter what you do you get clawed and bit etc... you just learn and add new techneiques to your handling. Was once talloned to the bone, in the fore arm...now you'll never see me retrieve a large bird with out "elbow" length leather gloves.

I'm laughing a little about your comment cause as soon as I got it in the face, I thought about the movie "A Christmas Story"
"no you can't have one of those you'll shoot your eye out!"

(sorry bout the spelling errors, it's late)
