Unexpected Finch deaths

About one month ago, I adopted five young zebra finches (6-8 weeks old) from a shelter as a gift for my boyfriend. I took care of them for two weeks before I went home from school for a weekend, and he has had them for two more weeks. They seemed very happy and healthy. Three of them had some missing feathers when I got them which have since grown in, which I was told their mother had picked off them to try to get them out of the nest. I read that this is common, so I believed that they were not sick. However, my boyfriend called me this morning and said that overnight, two of the birds died. He had been making sure they were all eating, and no fighting was evident. I don't know very much about birds...what might have caused this death?

Hi,
follow the link to my bird website. There are no ads or popups or any other nonsense, Just tons of bird info. It is predominately for parrots but if you scroll down to the hazards in your home section, all these things apply to finches as well as parrots.
