What about the dangers of Teflon?

Since I'm new to birds, what do I do about all our teflon cookware? Throw them out? My dad wouldn't know how to cook!! Or at least I wouldn't. But I sure as heck don't want a dead bird one morning.

Anyone know if putting scent e.g. vanilla on two cats will help them get along?

Teflon is a big no-no when it comes to birds. The PTFE fumes can be deadly to our feathered friends. I wouldn't use anything that says "non-stick" because they all contain some type of teflon.

You can use stainless steel or anodized aluminum cookware.

Here is a really good article to check out: TheAviary.com - "The Silent Killer"
The article has a list of all items that may contain PTFE (teflon).

Also, here is a thread that has links to other hazards & dangers: Paw-Talk thread link

Should we sell all of our stuff though? The teflon? Because I don't know what my dad would say about that. So its a definite NO to use in a bird home. And a coffee maker has teflon? Could he use that in a basement or something? He couldn't give up coffee. If I can't get a bird, I'm going to be devastated. Especially after I can buy it myself. BUT, maybe my dad will sacrifice too. Since I am paying.

There should be NOTHING with teflon in a bird household.
If anything, anywhere in the house says "non-stick" pitch it!

This is your first "make or break" issue, you'll get more as you go along. If you all aren't willing to do what is required for the safety of the animal, then you probably shouldn't have the animal in the first place.

As far as Teflon goes, it's not good for anyone in the house, the bird is just the most susceptible.

Show this article to your dad, see if it helps.

I'd recommend Calphalon Hard Anodized cookware. It's stick resistant, and I love mine.
