bjbberkey is on a distinguished road

what do you use to stop bleeding with blood feathers and toe nails.

Went to the pet store to get some septic powder for the next time my bird breaks a feather and the girl said she prefers cornstarch or flour. I used cornstarch once on my dog when he ripped his toe nail and that didn't work so I used my husbands stuff for when he cuts himself. That worked but I didn't know if I should use something made for animals. What's your views?

really styptic powder is best-- but you can also safely use flour.

I use flour. I think it works just as well, and I'm not afraid of accidental inhalation in what might be a struggle to get it on.

For nails, I use ivory soap. Just scrape it across the broken nail and it plugs it right up. Some folks also use paraffin wax for this purpose.

I don't use syptic unless I have to. Personally, I wouldn't use syptic on live tissue like a broken blood feather. It's best to pack a broken blood feather with flour or cornstarch. Of course, a broken blood feather will need to be pulled but I wouldn't use syptic on it. You can also use super glue (if you have to) to pack a blood feather until you can get your bird to a vet or someone who can pull the blood feather.

I wouldn't use syptic on anything but nails. It's good for nails but wouldn't use it to stop bleeding anywhere else.

I haven't had a chance to try the ivory soap but I do have it in my first aid kit for if I need it next time. I've heard a couple of people tell me now that it works great.
