why is this happening with my cockatiel babies? PLEASE HELP!!!

recently I had to take my cockatiels babies from her and her mate because they were plucking the 3 babies and making them bleed. So I talked to a breeder, owner and pet shop owner about what to do and she said take the babies out of the parents cage and put them in there own and every morning and night around 7 hand feed them and when I went to go feed the babies a little while ago I walked in my room only to find the oldest babie which I think is a female feeding the youngest baby I have never herd of this happing but I would like to know why she is doing this and what I should do about it and if it has ever been documented I surprised me but I guess it is possible what should I do about it? any help or posts to this would help me very much please help me with this I don't know what to do thanks again for all your help

It's not uncommon for parents to overpreen the babies. It happens in larger birds too. Sometimes it will go so far as to end up in mutilation and death ...they will preen off the ends of the wings and toes! So, its probably good that you pulled the chicks.

As far as the two chicks you talked about, I'd have to really see the behavior to know for sure what's going on. While it's possible that the older chick is feeding the younger one, I think that something else is happening..

They will solicit anything for food ...even each other.

If both solicit each other at the same time, they can both try to feed from each other. This can appear that one if feeding the other. I've seen this happen with other baby birds. This seems more likely,

..but then again, I didn't see it, and don't know for sure.

You should continue feeding the birds. They sound like they are getting pretty old, I'd keep feeding them, but also start offering seeds or pellets to them so that they can start playing with it and preparing to eat on their own.

Following the suggestions of the breeder sounds like the right thing to do at this point.

Cool

Handfeed

The babies and can you find out which parent is over grooming? Whoever is doing this needs only to be a pet. May try a new pair. Sorry sometimes breeding can go wrong.

upcd, I talked to my boss which breeds and handfeeds all kinds of baby birds from cockatiels to some of the rarest parrots and has experence of 35 years and she saw how the parents react with the young and she told me that the parents wanted the babies out of the cage because they were on the border of being weaned and that because it was a small clutch and her first so I do not think that my birds are " bad parents" Trust me if I thought they were bad parents then I wouldn't need some one to tell me to seperate them it would be my consern to do so I do thank you for your reply but she is not aggressive with it she just over preens them more less in witch many people I talk to and show them what she does seems to say the same thing I hope I havn't affended you in any way Thanks again
