Winnie laid an egg!!!

I found an egg in the bottom of my cockatiels cage this morning. I have no idea if the other cockatiel in the cage is male or female, i know Winnie is a female (unless males can also lay eggs) so i bought a nesting box and attached it to the outside of the cage securing it so they can get in and out comfortably. I dont know if this was the right thing to do, but i thought at the best it will be a warm place for them to sleep anyway. Winnie has been so affectionate the last week, coming to me for scratches and affection, now i know why...

I have cockatiels Monty and Charlie who we thought were boys...until they laid eggs! We just took them away because they weren't fertile and the birds wouldn't let anyone near them until it went! But awww, aren't they so tiny, the eggs I mean? I remember one time Monty wasn't well, so I got her out and was stroking her and she was going too sleep on my chest, when she laid an egg! I was like 'Awww she laid an egg on me!' she felt much better after that bless her!

Males can't lay eggs.

If Winnie's cagemate is a male and the egg she laid has been fertilized, now would be a good time to start reading up on the care of eggs, hatchlings, young birds, etc. Check out some cockatiel websites, do some reading, and maybe pickup a book or two on cockatiel breeding and care.

Keep an eye on the egg. If it doesn't become fertilized it will begin to rot and stink within a few days.
