Retire?

I know animal shelters dont but do rescues retire animals alot of the time if they are "up there" in age? I have heard of some, but not sure percentage wise. I have a rabbit that I "retired" do to behavioral problems ( she is fixed-- still attitude.) but I have never done it before.
