It depends upon the species whether they bite or not, Shaw's jirds (which minnie is) tend not to wheras other species like persian and bushy tailed jirds tend to be more hyperactive and more bitey. Yes, they are easy to be tamed, if you handle them regularly they soon come to you wantijng a cuddle, and also you can train them to fetch bottle caps. I have trained minnie to come when i tap her cage or whistle.. mind you she probably only comes because i give her a mealy worm. . Oh and yes any kind of girbil or rat food is suitable, they also like bird millet and extra peanuts, rasins, mealy worms and sunflower seeds. Also they adore dandelions and small chunks of broccoli and carrot ( well something has to eat the broccoli ) Hope i helped, any more questions, just pm me..

Gerbils are crazy! LOL! The only one I ever had kinda turned me off from them.I find them cute, but not a pet for me!

Jirds are cute...but again, not so sure they are a pet for me.
Then again, they cannot be bought here. You would have to ship them in.

I don't know much about jirds, what are they most closely related to? Minnie, is just too cute by the way!

I think they're closely related to rats, squirrels and girbils. But some of the time she behaves like a squirrel ( way she eats and climbs) sometimes shes fast when shes hyper like a giebil and sometimes she can be quiet and loyal like a rat.. it just depends on her mood.
