my homemade cage consern

a while back i made a cage for my rats. it is a pretty nice cage. basically it has a wood frame and mesh wire stapled onto it. okay, now the wood is starting to smell. i need to build another cage sometime pretty soon, but i dont really know how to advoid using wood for a frame. any web pages you guys know that can help me out, or you guys got any ideas. i know it can be done without wood, i have seen it on a web site, but i dont know how, they didnt explain very well

Could you shelac/shelaq? (I haven't got a clue how you spell it) the wood so it seals it and the urine won't absorb into the wood? It is supposed to be animal safe.

I've seen some cages made out of PCV... Here http://www.curiosityrats.com/infodiy.html there are links to websites with plans on different types of cages. Maybe you'll find one that you can do. 8)
