pregnant rats w/ lice
I have had several rats in the past and never come across this problem. I just bought 2 pregnant rats at the pet store and they have lice. I know u can use ivermectin on rats and it is safe for other pregnant animals but is it ok if they are pregnant?

I know youc an use it on baby mice but I don't know about new born rats it would be best for you to get the correct dilution or medicine from a vet. you trust.

Ask your vet for some revolution. Its a topical treatment like advantage and frontline.
I know it is safer then ivermection taken orally but make sure with your vet if it is okay for pregnant rats. I also know that they tested it on pregnant cats, and it didnt do any harm to the babies, but check with your vet to make sure.

thanks. I talked to the vet and he said to go ahead with the ivermectin and if it doesn't work in the three weeks he'll check out other options.

Go to your vet and get the proper info there and also if it is okay, then find out how much is safe to use on a pregnant rat.I have dealt with lice before, but not on a pregnant rat.
Also you will need to freeze any bedding and toys and disinfect the cage.

thanks for the responses. I have washed all bedding and disenfected the cage already. The vet said to do that with every dose of meds, but I disenfect their cages with every cleaning so it'll get done more often. The last time I dealt w/ lice it took about 3-4 weeks to totally get rid of.

make sure you have the right dilution if you are uncomfortable with it your vet can do it for you. If there is too much Ivermectin in the mix it can kill your rats. Make sure you get the liquid form. Good luck.
