They are kinda weird in California. Oddly enough, everything is legal in Florida though. They've even had a lot of non-indegenous animals colonize there, and still everything's legal: large exotics, venomous exotics, reptiles, mammals, you name it they got it in Florida. It's weird the different view states have on the pet trade. Obviously some things in Florida are a bit lax, californians think sugar gliders are scary. And here in Tennessee, absolutely no turtles or tortoises, you can have a lynx if you get a permit, but turtle ownership would be totally irresponsible!

Well, that's what happens when beurocrats who know nothing about animals make the laws about animals based on the limited (and sometimes wrong) information they recieved in the past.

I agree. Why would anyone who doesn't even bother to do research of any kind assume that they knew enough about animals, ecosystems, and the pet trade to create laws regulating it?

They recently had to start getting rid of colonies of African Pouch rats in Florida where some breeder let a bunch go and they began to colonize. There is also a region of Florida over run with Veiled chameleons.

Ferrets are illegal in California because it is said that they can not be domesticated. Or well not fully. They have almost entirely been in domestic situations but usually as barn animals to keep other animals away. It has only been recent times that they have become domesticated as pets and California's animal law is something about domesticated immemorium or something like that. In otherwords so far back no one really remembers when or why they were domesticated. Gerbils though. That is a little overboard. But California is kind of polar opposite from Florida. In California pretty much everything is illegal in Florida there isn't much that is illegal.

Ferrets has been used for hunting for quite some time, before they became pets. People used them for rabbit hunting, so they have been domesticated for quite some time.

To the original post:
How about pygmy mice? I don't know if they are legal, but you could have a couple of them in a 10 gal tank

Hi!
I was keeping my 3 and a half year old rat, who had cancer, in a 10 gallon aquarium.
The truth is, other than mice, I don't think any other animal can live in such a small aquarium.
I saw your post about joining 2 or 3 together, and I think that's a good idea.
You would need to clean it out alot, though!

Good luck!
