Rodent for a 10 gallon tank

Which rodents could I comfortably house in a 10 gallon aquarium with a screen lid that are pretty social? I'm just looking at my options with a 10g that I will have free in the future. I'm looking for something besides hamsters or mice. Thanks for any suggestions.

Uhhh.... Girbils?? Girbils could fit in one, but IMO they would do better in a 15gallon or so.
I dont know if theres anyother rodents tho that would work- 10 gallons would be WAY to small for a rat, and... Well, what ideas did you have? Im completly braindead rodent-wise right now, LOL!

what about getting a tank topper for your tank that would make the possiblities greater.

10g is absolute minimum for a pair of gerbils. I think you can keep spiny mice in them too, I haven't really researched spinies, but they will certainly be harder to come by than a hamster, gerbil or mouse.

Just tossing ideas out here. Would I be able to do a rat or two if I had a system of those plastic tubes linking two or 3 10 gallon tanks up to each other?

I think it might stil be a bit too small.. That would be perfect for some girbils though.

Honestly, I would get a tank topper and if you do that then you could get some gerbils .

Spiny mice would work, too, but they might be illegal in California.

Oh, wait, you are in california? Then gerbils are illegal too. I also think that 10g tanks are too small for rats, even if you have several linked.

Rats should also not be in tanks because their respiratory systems are so sensitive. If you had rats in a tank, it would need to be cleaned much more often than a cage would.
If you can't have gerbils, I think mice would be best.

I think there is a fear of them getting out and establishing colonies, damaging crops and eating harvests. Any new species introduced to an environment would affect it significantly. California even stops cars as they drive over the border from other states to ask if you are transporting produce. They are worried it might carry pests that will get into Californian farms.
