you think a cube type cage would work? or would they squeeze their way out?

What do you mean? Like the kind of cage you build with storage cubes? Since most rats can squeeze out of those I would imagine that spiny mice would escape within seconds .

Spiny mice are escape artists and I feel the best enclosures for them are aquariums or all-metal cages.

i concur, mine are sneaky, they use my arm if they can to jump out, they'll go off the cage to the shelf like monkeys (but i stop them), they's soooo curious and relentless

My ferrets squeesed through the 1 inch opening..i woke up and they were both gone..so i found put them back in and they did it again..so i double layered it! that solved that

Haha, mine do the same thing. And when I take the lid off the tank they jump on the lid and go on a ride . Crazy mice.

about one inch i would say....my rats would not get through, bc i have chubby rats

I've seen rats squeeze themselfs threw the tiniest spaces!
