Yeah, some states are very strict on their exotics. The kill states are the ones where people should never have a pd, but all the others are just fine. They may not be easy to get in pet stores, but pups still need saving and do get homes every spring.

Hi Scott, Was this question for Deana? If so, I have several (subject to change) prairie dogs. They are awesome critters.
We relocate wild ones from places where they are not wanted (construction sites, places where they are going to be erradicated, etc.) to places where they are wanted. It is very rewarding work.
Unfortunately, prairie dogs don't get much sympathy here in "cattle-country". This makes it very difficult to find places to take them to. I spend alot of time on the computer, & phone making contacts. It is a real pain in the butt, but they are so worth it!

Yes, I have one hamster. His name is Aston Martin, that's where I got the user-name from. He's a Golden Banded Syrian.

I'm always buying mice and rats, but every time I let them play with my snakes they go missing...
Seriously, I love dwarf hamsters... on one visit to the local PetSmart one of the clerks who was helping us said that someone had brought in 24 dwarf hamsters they didn't want anymore. They weren't allowed to sell them so they were giving them away. We took 'em... We gave 12 to the science teacher at school and setup a breeding program with the 12 we kept. My father-in-law is a PhD in biology and assisted with the genetics. We carried on the experiment for about 3 years and were able to produce some really cool colors that are rarely seen in pet stores, BUT we could never keep the dadburn things from eating one another... We sought advise from any number of authorities, but to no avail. We tried larger enclosures, smaller enclosures, various combinations of adults with pups and yet they still couldn't stop snacking on each other. I found it repulsive and gave up.
You know why cannibals won't eat clowns?... They taste funny!...

Lschriefer has 2 rodents
My daughter (10 years old) and I recently adopted from a rat rescue two female rats. One is a black hooded dumbo (Miley), and the other is an agouti hooded (Lily). My husband will even come in my daughter's room and start talking to the ratties which totally surprised my daughter and me.
This is the first time we've had rats; we have 2 cats, 1 snail - the carnival goldfish died after a year and left Gary the snail all alone. Our old man cat could care less, and our younger cat is distantly curious...mostly afraid of the rats.
I don't know the ratties' history, but they are sweet girls, and are warming up to us quite quickly - Miley has finally decided it's okay to crawl up my arm and sit on my shoulder, but Lily is still a little skittish - but whatever sister-rat is doing, she wants to at least check it out!

2 fuzzy brothers - Sammy & Danny.
One of our 12 yo twins decided she wanted a pair of rats after she finished grieving over the passing of her hamster. So we researched and found her the perfect pair (perfect for us anyway).
After about 6 months she decided she didn't want them anymore. I made her continue to care for them until she found them a new suitable owner: ME! She had to interview me and everything to be sure I was qualified to care for them. hehehe
It was more a learning process for her to be a responsible pet owner. But I knew I was going to take them on for her - I fell in complete LOVE with them from the first moment I laid eyes on them!
