Hello There! I have one male degu who was a rescue. He was found outside a year ago March (near Cleveland, OH) and brought into the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center where I was a volunteer docent. We tried to find his owner and when we couldn't I got to take him home! He was a bit the worse for wear - missing part of his tail, had a ragged ear and a scar above one eye. He is adorable! He loves to be petted, but not held. When we pet under his chin he lifts up first one front paw and then the other so we can pet his tummy!
We have named him Furry Belafonte (after Harry Belafonte, who sang the Day-Oh song...) We sing to him... Fur bell... Fur ur ur bell... I guess you have to be old enough to know who Harry Belefonte is...
Anyhow... My husband Tom and I now live in Florida and we are looking for a pair of degu(s?) to expand our family. We would like to have a pair so they have each other - and maybe they will be more amenable to being held if we get them young. Furbell gets to keep his own cage as we understand it is difficult to introduce another male into the same cage when they are a bit older...
Anyhow... those are the basics. We adore our degu! He is so fun to watch even if he is loud on his wheel when we are trying to watch TV!
We had two African Pygmy hedgehogs before we moved to Florida but we weren't able to bring all three animals with us. We had room enough only for the degu. We miss the other critters but were able to find them good homes before we moved.
I am rambling... I am glad to have found this forum!
