:beam: Well im not to sure if this has been posted or not but i figured i would go ahead and post it anyways...
Most people dont know, but they need to know what they are feeding there dog.. please read the links and remember to choose wisely and be careful of what you use.. It could save your pets life.. Sometimes i wonder if just maybe Ol Roy dog food is what killed my Neo Mastiff.. I no longer use that food! I have been using Nutro Natural Choice Lamb & Rice, and also Diamond Beef & Rice..

It's not listed on the bag, but there's something in pet food that might be making your dog sick.

The Food and Drug Administration and the Center for Veterinary Medicine found that the same poison used to euthanize animals turned up in many top-selling brands.

Kibbles 'n Bits, Pro Plan, Dad's and 41 other brands tested positive for pentobarbital.

Veterinarians use it to euthanize sick pets. Slaughter houses use it to kill diseased farm animals.

The FDA says after the animals are put down, their carcasses are sent to meat processing plants and then sold to dog food makers.

What we don't know is if this poison can build up over time and damage a dog's organs.

So the FDA created this list of brands containing trace amounts of the poison.

Dr. Borys Pakush says poisons in general can build up in a dog's system and often attack the liver, kidney's and the central nervous system.

But he doesn't know if trace amounts of pentobarbital will shorten a dog's life and we may never know.

"I couldn't tell you today specifically if I dealt with a case of liver disease, is it associated with pentobarbital unless I tried to do high tech testing of the liver, which, who can afford to do that?" he says.

The FDA started studying the poison several years ago because veterinarians kept asking why it took more penibarbitol to euthanize pets.

The vets say the animals seemed to be building a resistance to the drug. But the FDA says the trace amounts they found in the food are harmless.

Although just released, these tests were conducted nearly two years ago. The FDA can't say whether the same brands on the shelf today have pentobarbital in them. For that information, you will need to call your dog food company's consumer information line. Some dog food companies are taking extra steps now to keep pentobarbital out of their products

So do you really know whats in that food??

Good information! I wish more people knew about these foods. In a thread about potty training,

http://www.paw-talk.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12534&perpage=15&pagenumber=3

on page 3, I told my story about my papillon, Jasmine, and how Science Diet caused her food allergies. I had no idea what were in these foods, until someone told me and I researched this. A vet even was even in the store we were, buying Solid Gold for his cats. My dogs and cats are on all natural food now. The dogs eat Solid Gold and the cats eat Wellness. Natural Balance, California Natural, and Innova are great foods, too.

I have a question...not sure if anyone will be able to answer it though. So far, I haven't found it. :(

What percentage of the ingredients have to be listed on the label? For example, if there is a tiny amount of an ingredient in the food, do they have to list it by law? For example, take the chocolate bars that have "traces" of nuts (human food of course)...what other traces are they not listing...or do they have to list every little thing that goes into the food? Same with pet food...if there is a tiny amount of say, salt, do they have to list it? I hope I am making myself clear. The reason I ask is because I am wondering if some companies are still using propylene glycol in their wet foods but don't have to list it because there is such a small amount.

I'd say yes I know what my dogs are eating.

It depends on the ingredient and amount. I know for the US.

They don't have to list preservatives added to meat before they got it. So foods can be preserved with ethoxyquin and not have it listed. Also if it states an ingredient it doesn't mean it is or has to be only that ingredient. Take Barley for instance, if it says barley doesn't mean it is only barley, it must be 80% barley. Definition is
consists of at least 80 percent sound barley and must not contain more than 3 percent heat-damaged kernels, 6 percent foreign material, 20 percent other grains or 10percent wild oats.

So you can have up to 20% something else, including up to 6% of foreign objects!

Thanks Tracey, for this info. There was a discussion on this a few months ago, but not with all the facts you listed here.

I hate to admit, my dogs eat Pedigree. I just like everything I've heard about the Waltham Foundation (I think that's it's name) - and my boys always do well on it. The gas and bad breath some of the expensive stuff gives them turned me back to Pedigree more than once. Blackie even developed a terrible body odor that I blamed on his getting older while they were eating Iams. I'm glad to see a "no" beside Pedigree on these lists. Where does everyone find these "healthy" dog foods? I've never heard of any of them.

I'd always heard Dad's was such a good brand. Wow.

Now I wonder about cat food.

Sharon-
I know what you mean about it being hard to find some of these foods. I had no idea where to get it, until I did some research. Some of the food sites..like Solid Gold for example, have a store finder near you.
http://www.solidgoldhealth.com/

That's how I found some of these foods. Some are sold at small, specialty pet stores. Or you can order online. I have trouble finding Wellness for the cats around here, only one specialty store has it nearby that I know of. Petsmart doesn't sell any of these however, PetCo does. They sell Solid Gold and Natural Balance for both dogs and cats. Oh and also, Nutrition stores believe it or not! I had no idea! Here are some more links I found for you on a few great foods:
http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/

http://www.oldmotherhubbard.com/

http://www.naturapet.com/display.php?d=home-tab

I am very happy with these foods, the dogs do great on Solid Gold. I only have small dogs, so I think every size eats the same bag of food (you know how S/D has large breed, small breed, etc) and I think the prices are reasonable. I have the medium bag of Solid Gold for my dogs and it lasts a while. It's $17.00-18.00 I believe.

Thanks Bearacuda! That's really good information.

I'd always fed Iams.

I think if your pet is doing well on a brand that you are happy with - that's great!

I started reading about changing their diets because Jack had been diagnosed with Lyme Disease, he's getting up there in age and I really wanted him to be healthy- plus- I knew I'd be raising a sporting dog who would be working in the field and wanted to give him the best nutrition I could afford.

I was totally shocked that changing them to Wellness really made such an obvious difference. who knew.

That is a really good extensive list - thanks again for sharing that!

As far as listing certain things in percentage they dont always list what there supose to and as for things that are listed well theres always alot more in that food then what the FDA says they have to list. I belive propylene glycol is still being used without the FDA knowladge.. But then again i will be looking even further into this.. and will get back to you with more studies in the future.. all i know is there was alot of companies that was involed with alot of bad things and pedigree was one also and alot of the ones vets recomend well they never really knew they was bad dog foods that was killing and making dogs very sick... I think now that companies are being watched and monitored they have cleaned up there act but i wont ever trust um again... Diamond dog food has worked wonders with my dogs and will stick with it...
I will continue to get the dirties on the dog food companies...

Bearacuda...they would have to be using it without FDA knowledge because it is banned (at least in cat food, not sure about dog food). We were feeding our kitty a little snack of wet food, usually Precise, Innova or California Naturals, and our vet told us that her wet food may be causing her anemia because of the propylene glycol. That is one of the reasons it was banned in the first place. :( I would hate to think that some of the brands that I trust, more specifically Innova, would do such a thing. I highly doubt that they would but I guess you can never be too safe. :(

We raised our German Shepherd on Iams. She died of cancer before 5 yrs old. We fed her the dry and canned. I will never use Iams again. I now use partial raw and human foods that I cook or bake for for our dogs i have used it since our Shepherd died over 10 yrs ago. All of our dogs since have lived to at least 10 yrs old. Some longer. I know what my dogs are eating.

Oops can't edit anymore. What I forgot to say is maybe Ol Roy did contribute to your pets health problem, I've no idea (I certainly think the ingredients are terrible). But Diamond has been involved in recalls (that have lead to dead pets) and Nutro made my dogs very ill (after using them for years) a couple very badly. I've heard that was a recall or need for one that was covered up by the company. Who really knows, that is just hearsay. All I know is what happened to my healthy dogs on the food.

You've got the most wonderful canine as companion - a delightful puppy with charming eyes and pleasant disposition. Loyal and playful, this little creature would cheerfully welcome you whenever you arrive home. Your beloved dog fetches your slippers and excitedly runs around the house, waiting for you to start your regular game of catch. Simply put, your puppy is just about the perfect pet there is - well, almost. Because just when you thought that you've got the best canine in town, your little buddy has one little surprise for you. As it turns out, your pup has the unpleasant dog stool eating behavior.
