Exclamation

baby field mouse, please help.

Hi. I found a baby field mouse outside in our yard. It was in the middle of a big piece of our yard that is flat with no grass or anything, and i looked for a mom, but couldn't find one. I put it in our barn in a terrarium with dirt and grass on the bottom. There is a tiny toy mailbox lined with an old sock that i am using as a den for it, and we are feeding it soy milk from an eye dropper, which it is eating eagerly. it will not take solid foods though. i am feeding it every few hours, is that enough or too much? It is a few inches long with fur and open eyes. it has no injuries. my parents won't let me keep it in the house, won't buy it formula, a mother mouse, ANYTHING! I am trying to get them to take it to a nature center that puts injured or orphaned wild animals in rehab. please help! is there anything i can change that would be better for the mouse without buying anything that would not be for humans (like if cheese would be good, i could buy that saying it's for us, just an example.) i'm really worried though it seems okay, just without a mom. i know that i'm supposed to put it outside to make sure it has no mom and it will squeak, but we have three dogs who would love to eat it. PLEASE HELP!

I don't recommend feeding cheese, it's not really good for them (that's a myth). KMR (formula for kittens) should help or some crushed pellets (mice, hamster, or guinea pig crushed) mixed with water. If you absolutely have nothing of that kind that you can get due to your parents then even crush up abit of kitty food with the water/soy you are using. It's better than nothing at all at least. You need to feed this through a medicine syringe without the needle on. An eye dropper is fine but watch that it doesnt aspirate it into the lungs. Just a drop at a time. The mouse is probably too young to feed itself if it will not lick the mix from your hand. That is why you need to put a piece of cloth on the end of the syringe attached with a rubber band or thick string as it simulates the mothers nipple. In less than 2weeks it should be eating fine on it's own and probably you will want to release when it has all of it's fur and release preferably in the same spot it was found.

Hope that helps!

I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. Be sure to know though that you did your best and I'm sure this little one knew you cared even at such a young age. Not many would have taken the time and effort showing what a big caring heart you have.

Yes, you are to be commended on taking in the little guy. In conditions where only soy milk is being fed and there is no heat source (was there a heat source for the baby?), there is definitely no guarantee... I myself am raising a tiny baby (though it's a baby bird), but I have thoroughly researched it and have done this before... Shame on your parents for not letting you take any action.

RIP little guy.
