blood behind eyes

Our 12 (?) year old Lhasa mix has enough blood behind his eyes that he is loosing his vision.

We took him to a veterinary ophthalmologist at first because our vet saw Benji had cataracts and thought he needed surgery. The opthalmologist said Benji's cataracts were no advanced enough for surgery but the blood behind his eyes was ruining his vision.

So they did blood tests like cbc and tick infestation. All normal.

Now we have Benji under the care of an internist who repeated some of these tests including the biopsy for lymphoma that again came out negative.

More tests have been normal with the exception of his calcium level that is high. But the internist thinks Benji has lymphosarcoma and wants to run more tests to rule this out. Benji does have some signs of this cancer, but then again he does not have all of them including some of the most common (like loss of appetite).

Is there something these specialists are missing? Is there another reason other than cancer that could explain the blood behind his eyes that is robbing his vision?

Thanks for your help.

I don't think many people can respond to this. When I was in 11th grade my German Shoirhair was diagnosed with cancer.I mass had form in her head. This made both her ear and eye droop, and yes there was blood behind the eye.Iam not able to post pictures or I would show you how she looked.I work at a vets. office and I can tell you there are some many treatments available if it is cancer.I myself just had a battle with cancer, and won.Remember you can always get a second opinion..Good Luck

It might possibly be something called autoimmune thrombocytopenia. If it is, there is success dealing with it through homeopathics(www.ahvma.org/referral/index/html )/ Let me know if it is because there is a homeopathic vet that could give more info on dealing with it.

I will investigate this possibility. Thanks for taking time to help.

BTW. I can not get the link to work.

Sorry, typing too fast, I guess. Here is the correct address:

Yes, after I edited my post I saw the problem but could not re-edit my message.
I asked my internist about this today and she says that his platlettes (spell?) are okay.
The ultrasound did not reveal anything to support the idea that cancer is present but now she wants to do an MRI because they still do not know why there is blood behind his eyes and he is going blind.

There are two things that will produce blood behind the eye, blood in the eye, and/or eye hemorrhages: thrombocytopenia and erlichia. There may be other immune-mediated disorders too that can be linked to this but these are the only two that indicate blood in the eyes specifically.

I showed your message to the eye specialist and he said that all those possibilities had been explored and nothing concere was confirmed.

At the same time - besides correcting me to say it was blood in the eyes not blood behind the eyes - he said that today there was a 75% reduction in the blood. However, he was not sure if that was making much of a difference with Benji's vision and we have not tested him well enough to know.

Anyway Benji has recently been on an antibiotic (Simplicef) and an anti-inflammatory drug (Glyco-Flex III tablets) and the yee-specialist speculated aloud that perhaps one of these had gotten to some kind of 'bug' in Benji's system.

So maybe this is good news if it really means Benji's vision is improved and the blood is in remission.

Thanks. We have certainly prayed hard for him and he has passed two cancer tests and we don't want him to loose his vision.

I have worked with numerous Dogs that have lost their vision for one reason or another. The thing I have noticed is how well they adapt to this change. So if he should lose his sight I'm sure he would be just fine....As long as you don't move any furniture. Good Luck
