Blood in Faeces

My 6 year old British Shorthair, Merlin, has started showing blood in his faeces. He also has a little discharge. He's very happy and healthy otherwise, and is eating well.

I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow but wonder whether this might be weight related. He was overweight when we got him just over a year ago and we've been struggling to help him lose weight ever since. I've put him on Hills Light diet recently and hope that this will help.

Can anyone give me advice on what the problem might be?
