chinchilla bleeding
My daughter just went up to feed the chinchillas came down saying that there was blood everywhere, I ran up to the room Dixie is in her cage, I picked her up and looked there is something coming out of her vagina. It looks like a prolapsed uterus. There is no vet open now that sees chinchillas. HELP

OMG sassy, the only thing I can tell you is to take her to an emergency VET, and try to stop the bleeding the best you can..... Stopping the bleeding is important, if you she will let you hold her, try and apply direct firm pressure but not too hard.... I wish I could tell you more, but my only advice is to try and get the bleeding under control and get her to an emergency VET..... some vet's that work at emergency after hours clinics will see exotics, not all but some because that is part of their training in emergency medicine, but of course that to depends on the state, city, ect...... I wish you the best of luck hun, and again I am so sorry this has got to be very hard on you, please keep us updated

Pokey,
Dr. Olcotts answering machine says to use a emergency vet hospital in Hyattstown and they did not take chinchillas,
We were able to get ahold of a vet that would not see her last night but told us what to do until this morning when we could take her to our regular vet, The vet had us to put her in a small cage with a towel as bedding to help avoid a worse infection then is probably already there. We have a appt at 10 am, it is diffently a uterine prolapse she will have to be spayed. I am just praying that she makes it through the surgery with no complications.

I finally remembered the place I took my GP when he was sick. It is an emergency vet in Baltimore. They do handle Chinchillas but not as a specialty. They handle exotics. We called and they said they do care for chinchillas. Here's the info:
Falls Road Animal Hospital, Inc.
6314 Falls Road
Baltimore, MD 21209
(410) 825-9100

We had to have Dixie put down yesterday morning, the vet said that she had lost to much blood to try to do any form of surgery.
