Frontline for Rats?

I just got back from the vet today and found out they have LICE and he recomended me to use Frontline plus on my ratties. It seems to have worked and he told me to rub them down with the spray for a week and keep cage clean. Is this good stuff?

I need to know because my oldest male who is almost 4 is loosing his furr from the lice and I want him to have his last years or months to be ich free.

Also can it spread to my cats, or better yet me?

Aside from treating the rats, you need to wash ALL cage materials (disinfect using water/bleach mixed) and freeze any wooden toys and the bedding for a week or so.

Do not worry, the lice will not spread to you or your cats. These are rodent lice and will only affect the rats. They are species specific.

thats the first thing i did. i got new stuff, and washed the carpets with bleach in hot water. than i froze it.

They seem to be doing a lot better and happier. My vet said to treat my cats and told me they could spread so thats why i was asking. but the stuff he gave me is working.

I would find another vet that treats rats then, because rodent lice cannot spread to cats.

Yea and frontline isn't typically used.

Frontline should not be used for small animals, it's toxic to every one that I can think of. Advantage or Revolution are both safe for small animals.

Err, I'm glad they survived the improper use of chemicals?

I didn't say anything about the Frontline, because I never knew anything about that product! When I had lice/mites,I always used Revolution or a dab of Advantage.

But if it that product is toxic to small animals and plus the vet gave you false info (the lice would spread to your cats)...I would definatly seek another vet! One that specializes in small animals. The vet you went to obviously does not specialize in small animals,or they would know these things.

the vet has treated my other rats before and was great with them. The rats didnt seem to have a reaction to the frontline advantage and ive looked up what meds are toxic to rats, and frontline was not included.

despite the chemical endangerment I am glad everything worked out. I've had mites before and I used ivermectin mixed with water to treat them. I don't know if it'd help lice though.
