I didn't catch anything in the trap.Barry said he bets it was a rat or 2.I still have hopes of catching whatever it is soon.Everything is still set so nothing can get to them.I really feel bad for the ones I lost and didn't sleep very well over it.I just assumed they were all safe since I have no cats in the house.Just goes to show one can never be too careful with a pet.

This is indeed a horrific situation and I myself would of been devastated, I'm really sorry!

From the information, I would say whatever came and ate your hamsters, now knows where there is a source of food and probably will be back if it gets the chance.

The traps are a good idea and hopefully will be successful, but the most important issue, is to make sure that each cage etc. cannot be entered and should be lifted off the floor -- rats for instance are very clever and hungry rats will do everything they can to get to what they see as food!

The room the hamsters are housed in, should have every crook and cranny checked, even the smallest of holes can be got through by something.

If the traps haven't caught anything, this could mean there is now nothing to be caught, but whatever it was, will be back in my opinion.

Good luck..

Wendy

Still nothing all nooks and cranies are fixed.I am hoping whatever it was will either get caught in the trap or won't come back.

Wendy one was low to the floor the other 2 were on shelves higher up and whatever it was had to climb to get to them.I have all tanks covered with lids so nothing can get back in there.I am still looking for other ways I can prevent this in the future.I am still not feeling very well over the situation. The more I think the madder I get that some varmit could get in my house and do this.

Cool

Past the grief and on to revenge!! Good for you!

Do you have any dogs, etc, that have access to that room? If not, you might even put out some rat poison of some sort. (The medication I take as a blood thinner is actually a rat poison - want me to send you some?)

When we lived in the woods, I once had two HUGE rat snakes come in and eat their way through my dwarf hamster colonies =( It was easy for us to figure out what happened because the perpetrators fell asleep in the last cage. After that I put secure lids on EVERYTHING. It had never even occurred to me that something like that could sneak in and get to a shoulder-height shelf! I am so sorry about the loss of your hammies, I know I still get bothered by what happened to mine =(

Critter I guess I could use the roccal I have. One of the girls at the vets where I work say that they use that full strength to euthinize a horse,(diluted it is harmles for cleaning)but full stength can kill anyone if injected in the veins..I could put some of that in some food for them I guess.Yes I am ready for revenge for I have grandchildren and would be afraid whatever it was might get into their room.I know it may sound bad wanting to kill something but I have to pritect my others and kids.

But would they eat 21 hamsters and leave drops of blood on the floor by the bottom cage.As well as have a few dragging spots in a few places on the floor going to the door?

Runt I hope you catch this thing soon, I don't have any idea of what it could be besides a rat or snake.

Runt - get rat traps. Set them up against the walls, and load them up with peanut butter. We had TWO wild rats come into the house a few months ago. They came in through a closet wall, and trust me - then can squeeze under things you would not believe!

We found a bag of nuts chewed open in the living room. First clue. When we moved the couches - there were all kinds of things under there. They were partying and we didn't know it! When we moved last month, and they pulled out my wall units - it was incredible what these creatures had done.

They are not afraid of anything! We caught one, and I was sitting in the living room, and another walked across in front of the fireplace, climbed down onto a big frog, and started drinking water out of the dogs dish.

Needless to say he got nailed that night. I still get the willies about it!
