help asap please
I have an elderly female prairie dog, with a severe problem. She has this swollen area to the right side of her anus & vagina. It is pushing these parts aside. I don't know if she is urinating at all .She has almost quit drinking. She is pooping some, but she barely eats. She is also constipated some of the time. Does anyone out there know what to do for a constipated prairie dog? I give her lots of fruit with fiber & antibiotics, but it doesn't seem to be working. I have an excelent vet a hundred miles away, but I don't think she would survive the trip, or surgery. She freaks out if I try to leave the room with her.
The best way I can describe it is, it looks like a baboons butt. Every day it gets larger,& deeper. We think she did it to herself. Maybe she was trying to fix whatever was wrong with her in the first place. She keeps picking at it. I have put peroxide on it (which makes her mess with it more).
She is the most lovable animal I have ever had the pleasure to know. I cannot bear the thought of loosing her. We just lost one a couple of months ago, & a cat a couple of weeks ago. She is the very reason I fell in love with prairie dogs. We have snuggle time every night. She crawls up behind my neck & lays there for hours while I watch tv.
She is quite literaly living on love. She has such a strong will to live
I can't bring myself to put her to sleep, while she is still fighting. How does one know when it's time? We went through 2 other incidents when we thought she was going to die, but she pulled through. I just knew we were going to have to put her down.
If anyone has any input, I would appreciate hearing it. thanks

My only suggest would be to call the E-Vet and ask them what you should do until you can take her in to see them.

It kind of sounds like she has a prolaps, where her uteras/ other intestaines and such are coming out... while they can do surgery.. at least with some animals... most dont make it... you should take her to a vet, even if it isnt a speciallist they maybe able to help or atleast try... if it is a prolapse it is very very painful... you cant let her deal with it on her own...
I'm sorry, i hope this helps.. sorry for having to go through this and your other losses

Unfortunately she really needs to see a vet for this, and I would recommend taking her in first thing tomorrow.
I wouldn't use peroxide to clean it at all, as it can be very irritating and do damage to the cells.

Thanks for all the advice, guys. I think I am going to have to have her put to sleep, much as I hate to . Every day the swelling gets worse, & I can't bear to see her suffer. I don't think there is any chance that she can recover from this. It would take a miracle to save her. I wish she could tell me when she is ready to go. This is the hardest decision to have to make. She means the world to me. Please keep the advise coming. It is nice to have a support group to talk to. Thanks

I am so sorry that things aren't going well for your PD. In the end let your mind rest knowing that you did what was best for her.

Thanks everyone. I ask myself, my husband & Snuggle Bug every day if it's time. She just doesn't want to give up, which tells me I can't either. I don't want to have her put to sleep, & worry from now on if I did the right thing. She is such a fighter.

If she wants to fight, then you should honor her wishes and let her fight. Did you ever get her to the vet like Kendalle said? I really feel bad for you. But what's most important is that you honor her wishes. What's her name? I'll keep her in my prayers. I know it's hard, but hang in a little longer.
