Help My Mice!

Wednesday night I discovered that ony of my mice, Trixie grew two large, dark lumps in her throat. They literally appeared over night. At first she seemed as if she was in pain. She would sqeak if you even got close to touching them. Thursday night she did not want to be held at all. Even if you would pet her back she would sqeak in pain. Friday she seemed to be better. She let me hold her without sqeaks, but I am still worried about her. Also, the bumps seem to move around when touched.

I took her to the vet today and had to make an appointment for Monday. It costs 55$ just for one mouse. Basically I just want to know if they are tumors, or maybe just infected glands or bites.

I was just curious if anyone on here has had any similiar problems with any mice. I just don't want her to be in pain.

Also, my other mouse, Reptile, seems to have a cold. Puffy, watery eyes, and tends to make a noise as if she is breathing heavy or is stuffed up. I absolutely HAVE to take Trixie in, but I cannot afford 105$ to take both mice in. Especially to just tell me that Reptile has a cold! SO.. I was wondering if anyone knows an "at home" cure just in case I cannot get medicine for her.

Out of all the years I have kept mice,I never had that happen.I have had mice with tumors, but they were not dark in color. It could be swollen glands. What did your vet say?

As for your other mouse, sounds like it could be a respitory infection. She is going to need antibiotics for it.Also RI's are contagious,so your other mouse/mice may catch it.So she will need to go to the vet.

In the meantime,to clear up her lungs abit, place her cage in the bathroom and just let the shower run on HOT for a few minutes. The steam will clear her lungs temporarily.

What kind of litter/bedding do you use?

I took them to the vet this morning. Since Reptile has a RI the vet figured that Trixie also has one.. and her glands may be infected. She gave me some medication for both mice.. which they HATE.. hopefully it works.

Thats very strange; I have never owned any mice but I have had experiences with hamsters before, owning both for a good solid three years before they died of common hamster diseases (unfortunatly). Were they abscesss? But they are on medication you said? Hopefully they should be alright.

Oh I hope that they get better soon.I have dealt with RI's in rats.A way to get your mice to take their meds, put the right dose in some fruit baby food. They will lick the baby food up,along with their meds! Thats what I do,if I have a ratty that doesn't like the meds.

It sounds like your mouse has an abcess, mine have these every once while, mostly from wounds that get infected. These do spring up over night, I usually drain them and put a small dab of antibiotec ointment on the area.

look for a different vet, you may be able to find one thats cheaper, that still just as good. i know with my iguana some were $70 just for the office visit while i found one for 35 and i like him alot

If your mice seam groggy you can give them peidilite my rats love it when they seam sluggish

hey everyone, i just wanted to say thanks for all your advice!
it has been a while since i originally posted this so i figured i would post an update..

all 3 mice are plump and healthy once again. i took trixie and reptile to the vet and fortunately we were able to get rid od the colds they both had. trixie still had her bumps after the RI was treated, but i am happy to say that they have now disappeared.

it is such a relief
