Help! My son's at camp & his dwarf hamster is acting different!

Help! My son is at summer camp and I have been left in charge of his dwarf hamster. This morning when I went in to check on "Spike" he was curled up under his bedding and 'squeeking'; hard to explain the sound, but my neighbors son says his guinia pig does that. I've just never heard Spike make ANY noises, and he didn't seem to move around much. I can not have anything happen to this hamster while my son is at camp!!! He'll never forgive me!!! Well, yes he will, but I'll have some major making up to do. Can anyone tell me what's going on with Spike???

eternally grateful,
Tina

Hmm, I really need a little more info. Is Spike eating and drinking normally? Is he acting normal other than squeaking? Can you tell if he's scratching at himself while he's squeaking? Is he still squeaking or was it just that one time?

My dwarf hammy used to squeak a lot when she had a mite problem. She was very itchy and uncomfortable and she would squeak while she scratched at herself. She hasn't done it since I put medication on her. If Spike looks sick or abnormal I would definitely take him to a vet. I would just keep a close eye on him and make sure that he's eating, drinking, and doing everything else that he normally does. I think that dwarf hamsters are much more vocal than regular hamsters. I've heard them squeak at each other at the pet store. Who knows, maybe he was dreaming LOL.

If he continues to act different than he normally does, I would take him to see a vet.

jon is infamous around these parts
My hamster keeps squeaking, if you read my earlier post he also has a thing on his ear, so i think that the lump is causing him pain and making him squeak, but i will know after he has had it removed tomorow

thanks for responding.....since this morning Spike seems to be fine. Maybe he was having a dream or something, but I got really nervous thinking he would die on my watch. He is up at alert now, coming to the cage door when I enter the room. He really scared me, since I had never heard him make any noises before. I'll continue to watch him and his food and water consumption, but hopefully he is OK.

Thanks again ya'll

I'm glad he seems to be ok, I remember my beta died a few years ago while I was gone skiing and my mom thought I'd be awfully mad and think she killed him, I wasn't mad at her at all, just upset that he had died though.
