For starters, that's not a salamander...it's a firebelly newt.

Is it possible that she swallowed a piece of gravel? It's better to use stones with newts because they can choke on small pieces of gravel. To be honest, I don't know what you could do if she is choking besides trying to remove the rock...maybe use tweezers?

Is she eating or can she not move her mouth at all? Have you gotten the water tested?

I know she is a fire bellied newt, I was just panicing hard at the time and wasn't thinking about it.
I took her out and she closed her mouth. She opened it right back up when I put her back in though. Shes getting oxegen, water and everything I just dont understand why shes still got her mouth open

Is she still swimming fine and everything? What is the temperature of the water and have you tested for ammonia or anything? If you don't have a test kit you can bring a sample of water into your local petstore...most will test it for free.

What kind of filteration do you have and what size aquarium?

Also, I would call all the vets in your area and see if any see reptiles and amphibians. Although there aren't many, there are a few vets who do see newts! They should be able to offer advice.

If she's acting fine otherwise and the water parameters are fine then I wouldn't worry too much.

Good luck and I hope she's ok!
