how do you deal with euthanasia

they charge a arm or leg to kill a bird? bad enough i have one thats costing me 240 so far. and then an additonal 70 to change bandage. now i have to euthan another bird cause it broke its neck. is it really worth having a pet? you dont have to respond i am just so upset right now

first off you need a new vet. they are playing you! no way in the WORLD it should cost that much.
why are all your birds sick and hurt? when getting a pet you MUST prepare for these things to happen. YES it is worth having a pet, unless of course you dont want to pay for its vet care...

i have had 14+ rats come and go out of my life in 7 years. they just simply dont live long. although i did take them to the vet everytime they were sick, and they would die at two are three years old i still thought it was worth having them as pets... i loved them, they were my babies! yep, they get sick and die. thats what pets do. its sad but think of how much joy they bring you. but if you are worried about haveing money to care for a pet emergancy than maybe you need to re think having pets.

but like i said before, you need a new vet. i have never heard of anything costing that much. 70 bucks to change a bandage is crazy. my vet does it for 10 buck!

i hope you get to feeling better. i know it can be hard.

well i got a new vet to talk to but he is out til mon, my son is autistic,

he let them out again and this time before i got them one hit the window.
but the other baby got nesting matrial around its leg. scarred the leg cut
off flow and instead of healing back, it scarred really bad and she cut
slices in the leg, the bandaged him/her. but they had to knock it out to
get control. but he is happy now with painkiller, and anitbiotics. but this
one thats hurt right now is perking up calling, i think has sever
concusion.
i am driving them to the vet tonight when my hubby gets home, they close at

6:30pm.

and not all my pets are hurt or injured, i had had my tiels for over a year
with no problems, and my parrot for over 2 years.

Maybe you should think about having their wings clipped so they don't go flying out of the cages and crashing into things. Sadly that happens often to pet birds because owners don't want to get the wings clipped thinking it's cruel when in reality it's for the safety of the bird.

I hope you find another vet as a truely bird savvy vet has no need to sedate in order to change bandages. I'm assuming the $70 price tag includes the sedation. Just bring a thick blanket to wrap him in for restraint and it should be a lot cheaper.

Good luck

i can clip wings, and i have done that now. break down of cost:

avian exam 65.29
anesthesia 77.02
wound care 31.11
bandage with biodress, left leg 29.58
baytril oral, 2ml 19.36
2 melixicam 18.94

i found out that it will cost more for the vet to change the bandage then a tech or nurse. a follow up vet office visit is 42.00, then if you add on the bandage change, that 70 again. if i change this every week thats 70 week not to mention we have not gotten to the surgery for amputation. now i am gonna talk to them when i go wed to see if they will make payment arrangements. if they wont then i am surrendering the baby to them. we another appt to see, they are gonna take the bandage off, hopefully its not to bad.

77 was seaprate to cut the leg at the scar site to help improve the blood flow, but it is expensive

Glad things are looking better with the baby. Good luck with him in the future!!

I've had 'tiels that always get grouchy when they hit puberty. They don't want to be held or talked to or touched. I love 'tiels and would like to have another one, but right now is not a good time. I have an Eclectus, a Senegal and a Parrotlet and with the rest of my crew that's plenty.

Please let us know how the surgery goes!

Glad to hear things went as well as they did. I'm sure you know how adaptable that birds can be, so I'm pulling for the little guy to learn to adjust to his changed toe status quickly!!
