Question

Mouse with tumors

I rescued a mouse about 2 weeks ago. She was loose in the dorms where I work sometimes. It was very obvious that she had been someones pet and she fast became my boyfriends new sweetheart, Puck. We realized pretty quickly she had a couple of small tumors on her and in our research found that mice can be prone to these. Within days of us bringing her home her fur became smoother, the tumors seemed to have gotten smaller, she became more active, she built a nest in the corner, she plays in her food, her poops got more moist and larger. She seemed SO much better. Two weeks later she even seems a little thicker (not really fatter just healthier) but now the tumor on her shoulder area is beginning to lose fur and she look red and angry. I am not sure what happened. The tumors even looked smaller like they might have been abscesses that were going away.

1.) Should we take her to a vet or is he just gonna tell us bring her back when she starts to suffer?
2.) What can we do for her to help the fur grow back or be less angry looking? She seems normal and happy and fine but that can't be comfortable.

Also we got her a little buddy who we believe may have been pregnant when we bought her, Alexstrasza or just Alex. We introduced them and they seem ok but the new mouse seems rather territorial. They would play fine unless Puck got near Alexs's Wheel or igloo then Alex would wrestle with her and chase her off in a mess of squeaks and flying shavings. We separated them again but now I am confused.

3.) Are we going to ever be able to have a friend for Puck?

If Alex is pregnant that is probably where the territorialness comes from would be my guess.

4.) If we were to keep a couple of Alex's baby girls would they eventually be able to be integrated with Puck happily? or are they just gonna keep beating up on her cus she is sick...

Update

Here is a more recent pic of Alex. It shows why we are thinking she is pregnant. She is getting bigger. Also apparently the supplier for the Petco where I live isn't very careful about the sorting of mice or anything like that. We went there because it was the only place we knew of that had females. I wish we had had a different choice but in the end she is beautiful and sweet tempered. We are actually kind of happy about the idea of babies too. We want to keep a couple of the girls and try to find homes for the rest with our friends. We did research on what to do for her and read a bunch of your threads on pregnant mice, too.

If the tumours (if they are tumours dfinatly anyways) are hard, then they probably are malignant (cancer) ones and you might want to concider getting these removed as they can be painful, but if it is fluidy and squidgy/soft it is probably a common benign tumour which is harmless, but can grow big and painful, you also might want to concider getting it removed, but if I had any animal with a tumour I'd rather not put them through the stress of all the surgery and (if benign) leave her to pass natarally or (if malignant) get her put to sleep

Now, as you said it could also be an absess, which you could also get removed, other chances are; it could be a cist, which will be drained and you'll probably have rounds of antibiotics for all these thearies ect...

I'm not sure tho, I would go and see a vet.

I think the other mice are more likly to look after her than beat up on her because she is ill && yes I also think that she/all will eventually be one big family, happily living togther

good luck!! Best I could do for now!!

Red face

Yeah, we made a vet appointment for tomorrow. I had to call all over town to find a place that would take mice!!! My usual doc for dogs/cats and what-have-you doesn't touch them! I am so lost without him! *cries* I found a place but it is halfway across town. So here is hoping that they are good. The funny thing is I am starting to think the one on her back is likely a cyst or an abscess cus it is getting smaller and smaller, but she is still losing fur and it is getting scabby... I am glad we are taking her in cus I have the feeling she does need antibiotics.

I really really hope it is nothing too serious. In just a few short weeks we have gotten completely attached and she has SO much personality. She talks a lot and is just as eccentric as her owners. We love it, she's perfect. She has even started walking out of the side of the cage onto our hands when we open it. I kind of hope we do get a nice little mouse community going so she can teach the others all her "bad habits."

P.S. I think I was worried about them beating her up cus I have had so many hamsters. lol
