Sick Baby Rat

Jade asked me to post this for her:

A friend bought (saved) a baby feeder rat the day before yesterday - this morning it's nose is runny and it is sneezing - it's eyes are clear - could it be an allergy to the bedding or something more serious? All help greatly appreciated.

Post your responses and I'll read them to her when she calls me.

I don't know about rats having allergies... they're pretty sturdy little guys, but I would put the rat on different bedding just in case(couldn't possibly hurt). Clear eyes are not necessarily a sign of health, I've seen many sick ratties with clear eyes. However, I have a rat (Sneezer is her name, lol) that has sneezed profusely her hole life (almost 2 years), and even spraying a little mucus with the sneezes, but she's fine and healthy. Jades friend needs to hold the rats chest up to her ear and listen for any rattling/rasping/clicking noises, those would indicate some sort of respritory problem. Keep in mind while listening though, that rats breathing and heart rate is pretty fast, so listen for clear breaths...fast is ok. If the person has another healthy rat, listen to that one first for something to compare to. I hope that helps out a little bit, and the rat just sneezes alot like my Sneezer.
