Stomach Bile

For the last week or so every morning my Boxer, Knuckles is waking up and throwing up what looks to be stomach bile.

The vet is away on vacation and it doesn't seem urgent enough to bring him to the ER vet but he hasn't been eating much.

Any ideas>

it sounds urgent to me
take him to the vet, as if it is stomach bile he will be burning his insides everytime he throws up, and it would end up being very painful

So you think this is a big deal? Everyone keeps telling me that the greenish-red goop is stomach bile and that is totally normal in the morning.

I will call the ER vet a few towns over and head over after work.

Hopefully someone with more doggie expertise will be along shortly, but I'd be worried about odd things happening with regularity and duration. I've HEARD this can happen in doggies with sensitive stomachs and the acid builds up overnight, and can be helped by giving small amounts of food before bed. However if your pup's appetite seems decreased anyhow, I'd be worried about other things. Does your vet have someone handling his/her cases while on vacation, or just the emergency vet? If you don't have a good contact and your vet will be out for a while, I don't know. I'd probably have my dog at the emergency vet, but I get very worried.

I'm sorry, that's probably not much help. I hope someone is on that can help more soon. Good Luck!

I think I may have convinced you I'm a complete alarmist. I'm really not, it's just that I'm reluctant to give absolute answers like "hey don't worry about it" unless I'm 250% sure that it's OK not to worry about it. If other folks elsewhere say this is completely normal, you're welcome to take that advice into consideration. I just don't know that it IS completely normal...it doesn't really sound completely normal to me, and if it were my vet out of town, I'd be worried.

Anyway, I'm rambling, but again, good luck. Maybe they'll do a telephone consult.

What you should Do is Mayb contact another vet because if this is bad your boxer won't have much pain after and you won't regret it. thats what I think. GOODLUCK

Okay I went to the vet and it turns out that my dog ate something in the backyard (we think) that was blocking his stomach. Thank you for making me go to the vet. They gave him some liquid with a syringe to "break it up" and said he has to go back tomorrow morning so I have to take off work (my boss is so mad). They also injected him with saline to avoid dehydration. Keep your fingers crossed for me! I am so sad to see him not well.

thanks for your responses. Another pet forum I go to said that the vet should have kept him overnight for a blockage and that it could be very dangerous. Is this true?

Blockages can indeed be very dangerous, but if a qualified vet said your dog would be okay under observation at home I hope that's true. I guess it probably depends an awful lot on the size/type of blockage and whether it's stopping defecation, etc. (extremely serious!). I would be watching like a hawk for any change in your dog. You could always try another vet for a second opinion if you're worried. Did they schedule a follow up visit?

Ok, so this is the curious part of me ...
How did they determine a blockage? What do they think it is? What did they send you home with?

They sent me home with nothing, and didn't say anything to me about the blockage. They took an xray and were like "Yup!". Today's visit they said he is fine now. I said "fine now?" they said yup!

I asked what it was and they said probably a plastic bag from the yard or part of a garbage bag. They said it's "moving" and he should be fine. I asked how they knew and they started laughing and said "we xrayed him". Does this sound accurate? He threw up this morning too and no poop yet. He is eating and drinking- but most is still coming up.
