Urgent Help needed... (pug related)

My mother in law just called me in a panic that PJ (her year old pug) got into the trash & swallowed the seed to a peach. He didn't chew it just swallowed it. Now she has heard that peach seeds are poisonous to dogs and would like your advice as to if this is true or not. & if a trip to the vet is in order?

This happened late last night & she has been watching him very closly monitoring his activity. He is eating, drinking, playing & going to the bathroom as normal as he always does as if nothing happened. I guess it was a farily small seed (about the size of a quarter)...

Shoud she be alarmed & what can or should she do?

Thanks in advance!

Have you called a vet for advice? At this point, inducing vomiting wouldn't do any good. I would suggest calling the vet as I have no idea about peaches and poison. If the only problem the pits pose is possible blockage, I would just monitor him and wait to see the seed come out. We've delt with a couple of blockages, luckily neither one required surgery. The first was a 6 week old rescue pit puppy who ate a plastic soda cap. Sub-dermal fluids (made him look like he had breast implants all over his body) and 12 hours of watching and waiting, he shot that plastic out like a rifle going off! It was absolutely disgusting, but I've never been so happy to have a puppy eject explosive diarreah in my life! The second blockage was with Orion when he was about 5 months old. At first we thought he had Parvo! A vet visit showed no signs of Parvo though and Xrays proved inconclusive. The vet administered sub-dermal fluids and put him on antibiotics and we waited. 24 hours later there was poop and plastic Easter grass all over the outdoor kennel! Apparently the easter grass didn't show up on X-ray. (Now we line easter baskets with Timothy hay )
Call the vet to ask about the possibility of toxins associated with the peach pit and keep a close eye on his food and water intake as well as bowel movements. If he stops eating and drinking and strains to poop but can't, get him to the vet immediately. Depending on the size of the peach pit, he may or may not be able to pass it, but as with blockages, they can go downhill fast. Just monitor him closely and the second he refuses a treat, take him in.
I hope it passes on it's own and that it isn't toxic. Good luck and keep us updated

Mandie, it isn't my dog, it is my mother-in-law who needs the help, I just asked cause I figured you guys have more knowledge of this kind of stuff than I do. But yes that was my first response... give the vet a call.

as I mentioned I did aske about eating drinking etc & she said he is acting normal and nothing has changed. Thanks for the input Mandie, it is much appreciated!

1-800-548-2423 - Animal Poison Control. Give them a call, they'll better know the effects and what to do at this point.

I realized it was your mother-in-law...I guess it was just easier to word it like it was for you
What did the vet say about the peach pit? I'd really like to know if it's true or not. I'd never heard of them being toxic to dogs, but just because I've never heard of it, doesn't mean squat. It sounds like he should be okay, but you know what to tell her to watch for just in case. Just keep us updated on the little guy, but it sounds as if he'll be just fine

Peach pits are listed on several toxicity sites, though I'm hard pressed to find any symptoms, which is why I suggested Poison Control.

Wow..peach seeds are quite large...I'm not sure if the dog will be able to poop it out or not..I would call the vet and ask what they think you should do..I don't think it is hazardous enough to require surgery but you never know. Better to be safe then sorry.. give him/her a call.
