Rusty Angel/Centropyge ferrugatus


This is another pygmy angelfish that looks a lot like a Shepardi angelfish. This is a very hardy fish similar to the Coral Beauty (Centropyge bispinosus). It is possible to keep these fish in reefs since most don't harm the corals, but you must keep an eye out for problems since they can turn destructive.


Maintenance difficulty:
This fish is easy to keep.

Maintenance:
It is important that you feed angelfish all kinds of live, frozen, and prepared formula foods. Pygmy angelfish are known to eat mostly algae in the wild, so a diet rich in vegetable matter is essential. There are several good commercial foods available including Formula II and Angel Formula.

Habitat: Natural geographic location:
Found in the Indo-Pacific from the Tanabe bay (about 281 miles southwest of Japan) to the southern tip of Taiwan. Swims at depths of 10 to 30 meters (33-100 ft.).

Social Behaviors:
Found singly in nature, in the aquarium they are a good community fish that keep to themselves.

Sexual differences:
Unknown

Light: Recommended light levels:
No special requirements.

Breeding/Reproduction
Not accomplished in captivity. See Breeding Marine Fish page for a description of how they reproduce in the wild.

Temperature:
No special requirements. Normal temperatures for marine is fish between 75 and 79 degrees.

Length/Diameter of fish:
Adults can grow to 10 cm (4.0 inches).

Minimum Tank Length/Size:
A minimum 30 gallon aquarium is recommended.

Water Movement: Weak, Moderate, Strong
No special requirements.

Water Region: Top, Middle, Bottom
No special requirements.

Availability:
This fish is generally available from time to time.
