Unusual snake...

Just thought I'd post a pic of my asian vine snake. I got her a couple weeks ago, very weird animal. She'll sit in the branches of her tree for hours - pretending she is just another branch. Instead of flicking her tongue out like most snakes do, she'll actually hold it out for long periods of time.

Is this a poisonous snake? I am assuming that it isn't an affectionate type. It is so beautiful that it looks like it is fake. The pattern of its colors look like they are woven together. How big does this one get and is it rare? I know stupid snake questions. I just have my little rosy boa so I am always curious about different snakes.

She is full grown... probably 5' in length, but real skinny as most arboreal snakes are. She is venomous, what is called rear-fanged. She isn't considered dangerous to humans, unless of course you happen to have an allergy. She's not particularily aggressive or defensive - but not what I would consider a lap snake.

They aren't too rare, but since their diet consists mainly of lizards - rodents aren't very healthy for them - they aren't found in captivity very often. They are actually quite common in the wild, in Singapore and other places in southeast Asia.

Yeah, I've heard of a few issues with them like that. Very odd.

I'm still not convinced on the hognose bite though. Looked more like an allergic reaction to me... hardly scientific. =) Not that I have any interest in getting bitten to prove my point.

Yeah I was referring to that set of pics that has been going around on the net for a couple months now. Guy let his nasicus chew on his hand and he swelled up. =)

I would be very interested in seeing that data though... seeing some real scientific evidence would sure be a change from all the speculation out there.
