changing a leo's substrate - Paw Talk

my leo is probably about 4 or 5 months old now and getting bigger. when can i change the paper towels in her cage to something else?

You could probably change it now,if you want to...but don't use sand.I use coconut fiber.I heard people using tiles,I wanna try this.

yea i have been hearing about tiles and it sounds like it is pretty easy to clean up as well as a good source of heat distribution. winter is coming up and the cage seems to be getting over all colder since i first started. ill have to look into the tiles

Yea Id go with tiles....sand is bad for them, and I herd coconut fibers are as well as moss ect. as they could eat it and become impacted. I have 2 Leopard gecko, One was one sand before I rescued him. and the other I got for my birthday 3 years ago. I personaly use paper towels. but tiles are good as well.

I use coconut fiber and have NEVER had a problem.My male,Bear is about 2-3 and I got him from a breeder and he was housed on coco fiber since hatching and has been fine.Mystta,my female came from a breeder too...but she came from a different breeder and was housed on paper towels.She is about 6-7 yrs.Both are doing wonderfully.

I am thinking of changing to tiles tho.

I was just saying what other people are telling me as Im starting a leopard gecko rescue center. but Leroy, my gecko the I rescued was on Play sand for susposidly 10 years (thats how old i was told he was) and since I got him witch is about 2 months, he has gone blind in one eye. And i believe it was from the impaction. as it can cause them to go blind. Im on alot of Leopard Gecko forums, and I have heard alot of things, but I personally am sticking to solid substrait, as I dont want any chances. It might not look as good but hey, its safer, and easyer to clean.
