I don't know that there is any certain age that is best. I personally would wait until your pup now is fully trained how you want him to be....otherwise you'll be training two dogs at once which will be difficult (not impossible but difficult) and time consuming. Wherever you get your new pup from I'd be taking your dog with you, and seeing how they go before bringing one home to find that your dog really doesn't like it. Lots of socialisation for the pup you have now would be the best way to prepare him! If he is used to other dogs being around a lot he shouldn't find a new pup overly threatning to him!
