A question for you people feeding the BARF diet

Ok so here's the thing...Biscuit is getting fed a natural diet but it is not the BARF diet exactly. The BARF diet seems to be quite a long process to deal with, and frankly I know that I would tire of it very quickly! However I want to make sure that Biscuit is getting everything she needs. Right now I'm just feeding her a diet that I had Nacho on (but with different bones...Nacho got fattier bones) and she does quite well on it. Her poops are small and turn white within a day which I know is a sign of a healthy dog!

Basically I want to cheat a little on the BARf diet...I don't have a proper kitchen (like I have a sink and a stove...that's it!) and it would be too much to prepare meals for the dog as well as us.
Right now I cook her up a meal and freeze it and I usually get around two weeks worth of meals for her. This suits me great cause I can prepare it when I have time and then it's just as quick as opening up a can!
So here is what I feed her now:
chicken necks for breakfast (she's dieting so chicken necks are a lot less fatty than meaty bones)

dinner is a mixture of cooked burger mince (I don't like dog mince for her...seems to fattening for me!), frozen vegetables and a bit of rice (to make it spread further more than anything!)
It's two kilos of mince, 1 kilo of vegies and 2 cups of rice.
I also put a sauce over the top of it but that's just for my benefit cause the smell of mince makes me gag! Oh and I add a calcium supplement into that too!

I was thinking I could start making 1.5kg of mince, 1.5kg of vegetables and still add the rice (and the sauce )

I was thinking that I could mix her dinner up with some raw egg before I give it to her and when I do have a bit more time (weekends etc.) I could give her a change and feed her a meaty bone (to work those teeth and gums more), fish and vegetables (canned fish, raw vegetables..although I think I might need to add something to it to get her to eat the raw vegetables! Nacho loved munching on vegies, Biscuit refuses to!) and adding megaderm to her diet instead.

So guys what do you think?? I still give her manufactured dog treats (smacko's, liver treats when training etc.) so this is just her meals! Any input would be greatly appreciated! But please try and keep it simple...like I said it is impossible for me to prepare two meals at once and I'm too lazy to spend two hours in the kitchen each day!

Yes, I completely agree with you, feeding the BARF diet takes A LOT of work... I spend about 4 hrs per day feeding my animals. But, it's well worth it, as before I started this way of nutrition, my dogs had coat problems as well as were a bit overweight. Now they are 100% healthy. I'm going to list what is 'acceptable' for a balanced diet using the BARF way, but it looks like you are on the right track!

Raw, meaty bones; Meat; Liver; Kidneys; Heart; Tripe; Broccoli; Spinach; Celery; Bok Choy; Carrot; Capsicum; Apples (without the seeds); Pear; Grapefruit; Orange; (all whole with peels) Whole Egg (with shell); Flax Seed; Garlic; Kelp; Alfalfa; Kefir.

Usually a week for me goes like this: (This is morning feeding)

Monday-Raw Chicken quarters
Tuesday-Raw Meaty chicken bones
Wednesday-Mushed veggies, liver or kidney
Thursday-Raw turkey backs/necks
Friday-Mushed veggies, whole salmon
Saturday-Baked yams, fruit mixture
Sunday-Raw beef

Each dog gets a whole egg 3X a week. Raw. I also have decided that it's really important to give the dogs salmon once a week. This gives them lots of omega 3 fatty acids.

Hey guys! I've been trying to find more info on natural diet for my dogs. Pure14K, the list that you have, is that all of the foods your dog gets? How do you judge how much they get? is it based on weight? I've found lots of sites with general info, but I want to get all my facts straight before I start. Is there a guideline for protein/veggie/carb content? Thanx!

Kathy, no those aren't all the foods they get. They get a wide range of natural food, that's just a typical week of morning feedings. Yes, the amount of food they get is based on weight. As a general rule, a normal active dog require about 2% of its body weight per day. A highly active dog may require about 3% of its body weight per day. No two dogs are alike in their metabolic rates, age, or activity levels. Puppies can use up to 10% of their growing body weight.

Thanx Nicole! I would love to see what you feed your dogs of a night time if you don't mind writing it down for me! I would love to see a full week barf diet so I can accomodate it to suit us! Reading the stuff on the net gets confusing with the way they word it!

I've been told the raw egg thing is really great for the coats ... I know a lot of people who do that even if they don't do a BARF diet ... just pour it over the dry food ...

Elf, yes eggs do seem to help with dogs coats. Although my dogs get the WHOLE egg, shell included. The egg shell is high in calcium

Yeah, it is .. I feed my cockatoo whole eggs ... but ... how in the world do you get dogs interested in whole eggs? Do they know to break it ... do they play with it and find out it tastes good? I guess I just thought they would ignore something that looked like a rock.

Well I gave biscuit a raw egg this morning (with shell) over salmon (I need to go grocery shopping so I was just trying some stuff out this morning!) and all I did was crack it over the salmon and crushed the shell and left it in there...she proceeded to lick the bowl clean, come to me, look in my face and gave me two loud burps of approval!!! And even though that was five hours ago she is still licking the bowl!

Ok so this is what I'm thinking on doing...please let me know if I seem to be missing out on any vitals!!
Still making up the mixture that I give her for dinner right now and feeding her that most nights of the week - and add megaderm as a supplement.
Still feeding her bones of a morning but mixing them up a little more so she has more variety..so adding lamb and cow bones.
Then when I'm home to organise her meals better mix them up with salmon and chicken and make a vegetable mash with a raw egg (I'd like to give her raw egg three nights a week cause she gets dandruff)
Then once or twice a week, if I can get her interested, make a small fruit mash as a bit of a treat. If I can't get her interested in a fruit mash by itself I'll make that a meal with the salmon and chicken and raw egg.
I know this is simplified but it needs to be for our lifestyle so just tell me if I need to add anything cause she desperately needs it! Thanks!

That sounds good to me. If you can get ahold of any kelp powder or alfalfa powder or even cod liver oil and add it in, that would be good. The veggie and fruit mash are good, my dogs love them both. Glad to see someone else going 'au natural'

ok great I'll see if I can get my hands on some!! Nicole you guys have way better commercial dog foods than what we do! Our best ones over here are Science Diet and Eukanuba and they cost an absolute fortune!! I started going a little bit 'au natural' with Nacho cause he wasn't getting his dietary needs but had never heard of the barf diet at that stage!!

I don't feed the BARF diet, just can't see myself doing it. My dogs however do get raw eggs shell and all in their food regularly.

I have a weak stomach and the necks, raw chicken, and any fish is just uck to me. I don't even eat it. I applaud you all for being able to do it though
