adjustment issues for new dog

Hello,

I'm a new pet owner - my fiance and I adopted a Yorkie about a week and a half ago. She was previously living with a couple and another small dog. They just didn't feel they were right for her or she was right for them, or something like that. So they gave her away. We've named her Drizzit (she's responding to that ok) and she seems really happy with us. But she's having a few issues...

She was paper/pan trained (basically a litter pan with paper towels in it) and we've chosen to continue with that since she is used to it and it works out well for us. The problem is that somehow she's decided out dining room is where she should poo. I think I need some enzyme stuff to get rid of the smell (well, we can't smell it after scrubbing but I think she can). Every time she does use her pan we praise her and give her a small treat and generally make a big deal about it. But she pretty much only pees there and a lot of times you have to coax her to do that (standing about saying "go pee-pee/poo-poo" and hoping the neighbors can't hear you). This morning when I got up I took her down to her pan and urged her to use it. She peed but then ran off for the dining room to poo. I ran after her and caught her just as she was squattig down and brought her back to the pan. But then she would not poo for me. And I'm pretty sure she had to (she _was_ squatting when I caught her). We've taken to blocking her in the living room/kitchen area when we're not around (she has her food, water, and pan there as well as a doggie bed and toys). That seems to work but I want to let her roam and not worry. We do keep the pan clean so I'm pretty sure it's not like she thinks it's too yucky to poo there. Sigh. Maybe I just need to give it more time. Any advice? Thanks and sorry for the long long post.

You might want to actually leave just a little poop in the litter pan. So she can smell it & knows that's where she needs to go poop too.

Good luck!

Update: My mother suggested maybe she doesn't like to poo in the same place she pees, so I put a separate pan out in another room for her to poo in (and left some poo on it for her to smell). Then all weekend she used her one original pan for everything without coaxing... However, this morning she did the same pee in the pan and run to the living room to poo thing. I caught her in time to stick her on her other pan and she went there. She seemed very proud of herself (she always does a happy dance after she goes). I think my dog is just weird. Maybe it's just going to take some time. But if anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I'm willing to try almost anything (so long as it's not harmful to Drizzit).
