Back talking (Barking)!!!
I must admit that my puppy Petey has come a very long way! He is now about 7 months and he gotten so big! ( I will post pics tonight!) Anyways one of my major issues with him is that he will bark his head off in my face to get my attention! How do I handle this? I try not to respond cause thats given in to him, but he won't let up!

A lot of times dogs bark when they are bored. He need something to stimulate him or he will bark. How much exersize does he get a day? What kind of toys does he have? What is he interested in?
What have you tried to deter his barking? When does he bark the most?
Ha, I just realized that is a lot of questions. Its best to find "why" he is barking, it will be easier to help you.

Hes costing me fortune with all his chewy and bones!! He loves his bully bones-which some how he gets threw one in a day now! He gets plenty of exercise! He is mainly into chewing, and chasing the cats and his tail! But say we have company for one example-and we're all standing talking,, he will come right up to all of us and just bark like -"hey, pay attention to me"!!

I know, he wants to go to the pound and resue one. But I'm so afraid if the dog ends up not being potty trained, it will mess up Petey. Plus will another dog distract Petey's attention? Hes doing so well on the leash and everthing! I would love to get him a sister though! My cats might pack up and leave though!

First thing you have to do, is when he is barking to get your attention totally ignore him. Don't make eye contact, donot pet him, don't even say his name...when he is done barking and is quiet, give him a treat and tell him he's a good boy. if that doesn't work (which it didn't with my GSD pup) I got a squirt gun, when he started obnoxiuously barking, I'd squirt him in the face and put him in his kennel and wait 5 min. If he was quiet the whole time, he got a treat and was let out of his kennel...so far it has worked really well!!
I've found that the only bones that will hold up to my dogs for more than a day is compressed rawhide...my two can go through 12 in. extra thick bully sticks in 20 minutes O_O!!

Never use the crate as punishment. It should be a safe place for dogs, not something to be scared of.

as long as you don't yell and scold when you put him in the crate, he won't think the crate is punishment...my dogs LOVE their kennels as well, and I have never had any problems with putting them in there for "punishment" it's not nessecarily punishment, it's more confinment. When my dogs jump on people or excessively bark, or get overexcited and run around the house like crazy, they go in their kennels for quiet time, for a short amount of time.

I have lived with one of the sweetest dogs almost all my life, but in her younger years me and my family had to punish her. What we did, was whenever she was bad, we would spray her with water (she hates it), then if she didnt do it for the rest of the day she would get treats.(You could use this when your gob starts barking alot) It was tough love, but it worked, because she is the most well behaved dog now ive ever seen.

You just have to try ignoring it for as long as you can. If that doesn't work, do what I do (my yorkie does this). Look at him, yell NO, and put him in the bathroom for time out. Leave the lights off in the bathroom and leave him in there until he stops barking. If he stops barking as soon as you put him in there, then leave him in there for about 3 minutes. When he comes back out, he should be calmed down. If not, put him back in there.
I've found that using a dark bathroom as punishment works. You'll just have to figure out what works for you.
I would seriously NOT recommend getting another dog to solve your problem. I have two, and my yorkie still barks for attention. She doesn't want attention from my other dog, she wants it from us. Plus, Petey could have any number of reactions to a new dog (not liking her, being jealous, etc), so it's not a good idea to think everything will be fine with another dog.
Good luck!
