CoCo: UNFIT for Sale!!

I'm so upset!!!

CoCo went to the Vet today, and they deemed her unfit for sale!!! She's been having diaheria all week...

So I took a sample of her stool to the vet and wont get the result back for that till tomorrow....

She also has kennel cough and an umbilical hernia!!

On the sale agreement, it says the breeder will not be responsible for any fees, and that there are no cash refund....only an exchange for a new puppy....

I dont want a new puppy!!

What should I do?!

The vet says she will need an operation to fix the hernia...

They gave her 6 syringes of albom, some other antibiotic, and 2 other syringes...

Poor baby...

Did you buy from a reputable breeder or a byb?

How old is this puppy?

How soon after you got your puppy did she show signs she was sick?

What do you mean, what should you do? You have her get surgery to fix the hernia and you take care of her.

Dogs arn't refundable "items" that you can take back when they become more than cute.

Im not sure where you got your dog, sounds like a byb or puppy mill to me. Hopefully this will discourage others from doing the same.

Sorry if thats not the quick fix you were looking for.

I never intended to return her! I was just asking what should I do about the breeder!

He seemed like a good breeder, private, gave me all the paper works... which I know could have been forged...but nonetheless. He had both parents on premises as well. He had four in the litter, two which were already sold, and one had a "cold" he said, and he refused to sell her. He told me she was healthy. She looked healthy. She's about 9 weeks old

She started getting diaheria two days later, and coughing and gaggin as well.

I thought the diaheria was from the sudden food change. I wont know the results for that until tomorrow.

What should I do when I talk to the breeder?

Does this breeder do health testing? How many litters a year do his dogs produce? If one of the pups had a "cold" this could very well be the result of why your pup is sick now.

P.S. Im in a crappy mood today, I would really call him and tell him that.

If she has kennel cough she should be able to recover from that with antibiotics and good care .... an umbilical hernia is something that can sort of just happen for fluke reasons with certain puppies, even a championship show dog could produce a pup with an umbilical hernia... usually that is corrected during the spay surgery and is a fairly routine operation.

The diarrhea is what I am concerned about.. there are several reasons a puppy could get diarrhea the big 4 that come to mind are:
Worms- usually treated with oral worming medication
Parvo-can be cured if caught in time... but expensive and most of the time fatal
Distemper-Fatal there is currently no cure for distemper
Intestinal Blockage (could she have gotten into something she shouldn't have? Even eating part of a chew toy or a blanket could be enough to cause a blockage)- fixed with surgery

Have you brought her around any other dogs or puppies recently? this includes any trips to places where other dogs could have gone to the bathroom and particularly places like Pet supply stores ... they are germ factories and should be 100% avoided until about 2 weeks AFTER the puppy has completed ALL sets of shots (around 4-5 months old depending on your vet).

I would contact the breeder after you get the test results and let them know the other puppies could be in danger and those other 2 owners need to be contacted.

Hope everything works out. Keep us UTD of her condition .

The goodness is that the vet said that the hernia could easily be fixed when they spay her...

The bad news is that I'm getting my thyroid removed via radioactive iodine treatment thursday....and even though they said i'll be safe around pets....i'm not chancing it... so i wont be able to watch her while she's on her med..

She's sleeping right now.

If I were you I would call the breeder and let him know whats going on...and see what he has to say about it, and see if he will offer to pay any of the vet bills. I know his contract said that he wont pay anything, but its worth a try, especially if you just got her. How long have you had her?

Did you check the breeder's reputation with anyone but himself? 25 years experience doesn't mean squat if he's not responsible. He should have been able to supply references from previous customers.

I'm so sorry that your baby is having problems! I hope that when you call the breeder, he is willing to work with you. I hate when they say that they won't pay medical bills or refund your money, but they will offer a replacement. I can't imagine "exchanging" one of my babies for another one because they were sick, knowing full well that there is a good chance he/she would be put to sleep because of the illness.

It sounds like she has found a good home with you because it sounds like you care about her alot, and I hope that the breeder is cooperative.

Lesson: Remember to take time to think about what's truly important. Oh, and give your pets a hug.

What kind of food did you switch her to? My parent's Westie has a lot of food allergies (meats and wheat). If she has them, she has major diarrhea. They ended up having to switch her to a vegan, wheat-free food. She can also have small amounts of duck. I don't know if Westie's are prone to allergies, but if they are it might be worth looking into.

The foods Sassy can have are by Natural Balance (not sure what they offer in the way of puppy foods). Might be worth a question to the vet at your next visit.
