DEVELOPING THE RELATIONSHIP: Belly Rubs

DEVELOPING THE RELATIONSHIP: Belly Rubs

Most dog owners underestimate the benefit of the standard belly rub -- of one's dog, of course, although we've known humans who enjoy such rubs, too!

Here and there, you'll find a dog that plainly tells you "Uh hum, I'm not one of those dogs" but, generally speaking, most dogs not only love, but yearn, for such rubs.

If your dog is a pooch who likes it, you'll first see the tingling smile a belly rub sends across that furry body. Then, if you're really paying attention, you'll notice that your relationship grows closer.

Most dog experts agree that the canine voluntary belly up position is one of submission. It's a behavioral statement saying,"...."

Crittercall is on a distinguished road
And, if I may add, one method to work with a more dominant dog (i.e. Sasha) is to pick them up - assuming they are puppies or small enough - and hold them on their backs until they can stay still for several seconds. This is one way of showing them that you are the Alpha animal of the pack and that they have to do what you tell them to.

Sasha needs to spend DAYS on her back!

I did this with my boyfriends dog and she loves it. I also pick her up like she's a small pup eventhough she's not (6 month old pit bull). She runs to me and barks when I come to the house, she has always got a smile on her face when she sees me. I LOVE IT!! She's such a sweet heart.
