Does anyone feed Nature's Recipe?

Due to Colleen's treatment, finances are extremely tight right now. Lucas talked about wanting to take the dogs off of the ProPlan and putting them back on Beneful. I was able to talk him into a compromise: Nature's Recipe (sold at Petsmart) has an "easy to digest" fish and potato formula that is priced midway between PP and Beneful. All of the Nature's Recipe formulas advertise no wheat, no corn, no beef. Which is great for us due to all of the dogs have some some form of allergies and Tucker having a sensitive stomach (PP Sensitive Stomach and Skin with salmon and the Beneful Healthy Radiance with salmon are the only foods that haven't given him stomach problems, so my goal was to find another fish based formula.)

Has anyone ever fed this food and know anything about it?

I would love nothing more than to put them on Natural Balance or Wellness, but we simply can't afford that right now.

I personally dont feed it, but looking at the ingredients, it doesnt seem like its a bad food. I might be wrong and you might want to wait for some comments from others, I just remember that the first 3-5 ingredients are the most important, and I dont see any byproducts in the first 5 so just at a glance it looks like it should be good. I know Jade and Chrisanne have dogs also and might have some more insight, but it looks alright from what I can tell.

Ingredients:

Catfish meal, ground rice, oatmeal, pearled barley, dehydrated potatoes, chicken fat (preserved with with mixed tocopherols), natural flavor, calcium carbonate, tomato pomace, sodium tripolyphosphate, flax seed, potassium chloride, minerals (zinc proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, iron proteinate, copper sulfate, copper proteinate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, calcium iodate, sodium selenite), vitamins (vitamin E supplement, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), inositol, niacin supplement, vitamin A supplement, d-calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, beta-carotene, riboflavin supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, menadione sodium bisulfite complex, vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid, biotin, vitamin B12 supplement), yeast culture, choline chloride, yucca schidigera, rosemary extract.

I feed raw, don't like any kibble. Raw would certainly be a cheaper way to go if you like it and have the time. Costs me next to nothing to feed my dogs.

Just wanted to let you know - recently there have been some bad batches of Beneful and a good number of dogs have DIED from eating it. >.<

I don't know about Nature's Recipe. Just that I haven't heard of anything but Beneful killing dogs.

I have seen it but haven't tried it. I would guess based on the ingrediants it is OK. After reading the success you had with the PP we tried it for our beagle with allergies and he hasn't been in this good of shape in a long time. He isn't itching at all, his fur is all grown back and his coat is just beautiful!! But you are right it is expensive. My heart always stops for a second when they hit the total button when we have to buy dog food along with the rest of the pet food and stuff. (We have Reggies food on there too)

That was my actually going to be my next choice if the Pro Plan didn't work for my guys (The Pro Plan worked so I have just stuck with it).... when switching over to it, I would recommend switching slowly, if you have say 1/2 a bag of Pro Plan left start switching over now by adding a few pieces of the Nature's Recipe in with the pro plan ... gradually increase it by a little bit every day over the next few weeks until you are all out of Pro Plan and on 100% Nature's Recipe. This would be better than just switching them over to it straight, especially for Tucker your sensitive tummy guy (doing it slowly will reduce the chances of him getting the runs and/or bouts of vomiting).

IMO this would be a lot better choice than the Beneful which has corn in it, a cause for a lot of dogs allergies, both skin and tummy.

Good luck ..I would be very interested to know how they like/tolerate the Nature's Recipe.

We had to go out of town at the last minute this weekend (my grandfather died and his funeral was up in Buffalo, New York), so I haven't had a chance to start switching them over yet. We're going to start at dinner tonight. I'll let you know how it goes.

Sara, I'm glad the PP is working out well for you!

That is actually not true. I looked around for some info about it because I was curious. Here is an article that I found.

Beneful Dog Food Safety Warning - Netlore Archive

Doggy Bling: Upscale dog products, dog spa lines, dog apparel, dog collars, dog beds

Im not sure what the ingredients are in Beneful, but you just want to check at least the first 3 ingredients. If there is corn, grain, or anything like that, its not very good quality.

Apparently the new food is a hit, as I caught Colleen trying to dig into the open bag after dinner. *rolls eyes* I usually keep the food in a big bin with a locking lid, but the rest of the Pro Plan is still in there, so I can't put the new food in until we're done with the mixing.

Update: Last night for dinner and this morning for breakfast, I gave them all 25% Nature's Recipe and 75% Pro Plan. No loose poo this morning when I took them potty! Even Tucker didn't have any tummy problems.

It doesn't have the fishy smell at all! Catfish, in general, isn't as fishy smelling as salmon. One more reason I like this food: Colleen normally gets BAD fish breath with the Pro Plan.
