Ewww!!!!
Jeff was kind enough to let the dogs out this morning at 5am before he left for work. I woke up to the smell of skunk. It was so strong I thought maybe it was in or under the house.
Apparently Sydnee discovered the skunk on the far side of the back yard. Thankfully it was on the other side of the fence! Syd got a full facial blast. We had all of the windows open so now my entire house smells like skunk plus Jeff let Syd back in so that just added more skunk aroma to the house. Sydnee managed to wipe most of the smell onto her doggie bed and now I can only smell it on her if I put my nose right on her face and sniff. The doggie bed is now in a plastic bag outside.
I've sprayed Oust a few times all around the house and about half a bottle of Febreeze but I can still smell it. I'm afraid if I put Syd in the bathtub and wash her it will only make her smell stronger. Surprisingly, she really isn't all that smelly. I just bent down to sniff her again and only the one side of her face stinks and I have to put my nose right on her fur.

Against my better judgement I bathed her and she smells even worse now! I bathed her twice and eeeewwwwww!!
I called the vet and she said use 1 bottle of peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1 tsp of Dawn dish soap. Mix it up and put on wet, stinky dog. I just went to get the supplies but now I have to bathe myself and go to work. I might use that mixture on myself because I swear I smell like a skunk. The lady at the store said I didn't but I think she was just being polite.
Looks like Jeff will be dog washing when he gets home from work in a couple hours.

EEEEEEEK! I'm glad we dont have any skunks around here for my dog to discover! Or none that i have ever seen anyway.
Well, i hope Syd learned from the "facial blast" and leaves it alone next time.
Do dogs usually learn after something like that?

My parent's dog Naomi got sprayed in the face once - actually she got sprayed more then once but it only got her in the face once, lol - she certaintly didn't learn to leave them alone!
Once when she got sprayed we washed her with Katchup! It stained her fur a pinkish color, it was so funny.
Buuut anyways, bathing them a lot doesn't seem to help. With Naomi her fur would always smell for awhile after, but only if you got really close, and bathing her didn't work - we tried the mixture you said too. We always just let it wear off, and didn't get our noses too close to her for a few days.
It's horrable when it gets in the house though! And it seems like no matter how much you clean you can still smell it until it eventually just wears off on its own.

Fun times! We had a couple of idiots bring their dogs into the ER for a spray ... uh, what do you really want us to do and why did you feel the need to torture us too?
Keep a pot of REALLY strong coffee brewing - the scent will cover the skunk smell until it fades.
Sorry Rhonda!

When I got to work I realized that I could smell skunk on my scrub jacket. For some reason only the jacket part smelled bad, my top was ok thank goodness.
When I walked in the house tonight the skunk smell was still on the strong side. I'm going to have to get up extra early to wash some clothes before I go to work so I don't stink again.

My dog got sprayed and I went to the petstore and asked. The groomer told me the kind of shampoo they usually used and it wasnt really skunk shampoo. I completely forget what it was called. I washed the dog twice, then just let the rest fade away because after washing him it wasnt strong enough to notice.

Rhonda, here's hoping the skunk smell situation is removed from your house!

Scarlette, I've only had to deal with this situation once; and from my experience your best "hope" is the old axiom "Time heals All Wounds". Tomato based recipes weren't particularly effective for me, and the peroxide based formulations were only slightly better. If you want to try one that is supposed to work I've included a link from the University of Nebraska. On the bright side, at least you aren't in high school...(teenagers can be so cruel ) and unlike in my case, it's your dog that got the worst of it. Best of luck with your new hobby. <-Steve->

Poor Sydney!
I don't mind the smell of skunk if it isn't too strong but I don't think I would like it if it was a strong blast.

I noticed the skunk smell is almost gone from the house, except for the dogs' bedroom. It's still a little smelly in there. It was so bad yesterday that we could smell it in the basement!
When I did my first rounds at work yesterday I explained to my patients that they might get a whiff of skunk when I was around them and they all thought it was quite funny. Luckily I wasn't too stinky.
I was a little concerned about Syd last night. She didn't eat all of her food and that is so unlike her! Tonight she finished everything so I feel a little better. On the plus side of all of this, my little devil dog hasn't been so cocky with the others. They must have been teasing her because she hasn't tried to bully them around like she normally does. I'm sure she'll be back to her normal spawn-of-satan mode in no time though.
