Fat Sheltie

Hi there I am new here and I have a sheltie that is almost three years old. He weighs around 19lbs. We were at the vet on Saturday and the vet said he needs to lose so weight (he has fat pads)
I was wandering if anyone could help us.

Like-
any good foods
how much to feed
and anything else.

I walk him and the park 2 time a day for about 30mins and he goes to play with my friends dogs too.

Thanks.

What are you feeding him now??

The important thing to stay away from is foods that say "light" or "reduced calorie" these foods are very bad because they are loaded with carbs that are not good for dogs.

The important thing to do is exercise, keep him active, and portion control. Feed him two to three small meals a day.

Also, you want to eliminate a large majority of treats and table food (if you give any) When my Basset/Lab was a little chunky I used those tiny Zuke's training treats, the Old Mother Hubbard itty bitty bisciuts, or the Solid Gold Jerky broken up into little pieces, and I would only give a maximum of 4 treats per day.

Good foods to do are:
Innova EVO-is high protein, low carb, and NO grain formula. I have had several successes with this food for weight loss, the main thing to remember is portion control!!

Innova Reduced Fat

Solid Gold Barking at the Moon-Grain Free as well

Solid Gold Holistique Blendz-special formula for overweight, less active senior dogs. (It just doesn't taste that great)

or consider feeding him raw or home cooked, which takes some time and ALOT of research, but it is well worth it in the end.

Good Luck!!
