Frontline or Advantage?
First off if this is posted in the wrong area I am sorry.
I haven't been around in a loooong time. I have a lot going on in my life. I do have a question. Which one is better Frontline or Advantage?
This is the first time I have to use this type of flea treatment on my dogs and wonder whats everyones opinion.
I normally take care of fleas by bathing my dogs once a week with dawn soap dish. It works like a dream but its not long lasting. The last 2 weeks I have had to at least wash 200 fleas of each dog! I have NEVER had them this bad before. Todays bath had a color change of the water from blood and flea poop. I won't bath them more then once a week, well there are those rare times when they seems to find something I have to wash out of their fur, but with this flea problem Dawn is going to require a couple times a week to work. I called my vet and they are going in the morning to get one of these treatments.
I have asked everyone I know which one they like and it is spilt down the middle. I guess I'm being a nervous mommy on this.
Has anyone heard of any harm coming from these?
Thanks!

Harm? Nope. You do have to watch using things like Advantix around cats though, as they can be toxic to them.
I use Frontline Plus, personally.
You'll also want to de-worm your dogs when you get the topical meds, more than likely. Fleas carry tapeworms, which then transfer to the dog when they accidentally eat them.
Are they on heartworm prevention?

Heartworm prevention is taken monthly for the most part. I know Ohio is an area where it's definitely needed. I'd strongly suggest a heartworm test (which should be done annually) and getting them on heartworm preventative if they didn't get a 6 month shot.
Heartworm Prevention
Regarding the deworming, that simply kills what's there. If they're repeatedly getting fleas, they are probably getting tapeworms again. I would want them dewormed again.

I've used K9 Advantix, Advantage, Frontline Plus, Frontline Top Spot, and Revolution. Right now, my dogs are on Revolution for fleas and heartworm prevention, but the new vet I work for doesn't carry Revolution. So, I'll be probably going to Heartgard for the heartworm prevention and K9 Advantix for the fleas. The reason I am choosing K9 Advantix is because it does both fleas and ticks. In the area I'm living in now, ticks are a HUGE problem. Frontline Plus is good, but the fleas and ticks around here are becoming immune too it and it doesn't seem to be working as well. I don't have any cats, so there is no problem with my using it in my household.
If it's between Advantage and Frontline Plus though, I'd go with the Frontline. Advantage doesn't seem to do much for fleas in this area.

My own personal experience:
Advantage: takes forever to dry. FOREVER. We always wind up with it on our hands from petting them or on the sheets from when the lay down to nap or go to bed for the night. I refuse to use it anymore.
K9 Advantix: takes longer to dry than Frontline, but not as bad as Advantage. The only one that is supposed to protect against mosquitos.
Fronline: My personal favorite. It dries the quickest so it doesn't get rubbed off on everything. As far as I know Frontline works for ticks as well, or maybe that's Frontline Plus.

I like Frontline Plus...seems to work the best and it covers both fleas and ticks.
When my Cocker was a puppy she got fleas at the vet's office and after I used Frontline Plus I never saw another one again.

we are going to buy k9 I think...but still doing some research lol...but they are on their heartworm meds...we were just worried about using the flea stuff because they are so young and they are forever biting each others scruff lol...so I am a little worried about them digesting it...I know I am probably paranoid but as of now there are no fleas...we had the yard treated (and still do every 3 weeks) and it seems to really work...but we want to put them on flea meds to prevent any bad stuff happening just in case

flea treatments are a re personal thing, and like some other people here have said, it does depend on where you live to some extent as which one is best for you.
Hopefully these articles, written by our vet, will help you make up your mind:
Trixan: Frontline for dogs and cats with fleas
Trixan: Advantage flea treatment

hi Razzi
we have found that these things boil down to a large extent to two things - personal preference and where you live. Our vet penned a couple of articles on the subject - hopefully they will be of some help.
All the best
