Help Quick! I cut my dogs nail too short!
I cut my dogs toenail way to short and it's bleeding. I put some corn starch on it and that stopped it when it happened (about 5 hours ago). Well we just noticed blood spots all over the carpet and couch and his nail is bleeding again!!
Is there anything I can do to ensure it doesn't bleed again (like when were not home)?
Thanks!!

You can get that stuff especially for when you cut the quick...I think it might be called QuickStop, but unsure...go to a petstore and ask for it

Hi Tbird..
If I remember right, you have a doxie named Buddy? I have 2 doxies. Cornstarch was a good thing to use! Also, what I get at the store is called syptic powder, to stop the bleeding right away. I would put some more cornstarch / or syptic powder on it everytime you notice any bleeding. If you are worried and it keeps bleeding, and doesn't stop with the cornstarch, you could try wrapping it with a little bit of gauze and that adhesive tape (sort of like gauze that sticks together I guess?). There is no gaurantee that he won't try to get the wrapping off, but it could help.
One time, Jasmine's( my papillon) one little nail was hanging all the way off, we have no idea what happened, the vet said she probably got it caught on something outside, or while playing with my other dogs. I was freaking out b/c it was bleeding. It stopped after a mintute, but I went to the store and got the gauze I was talking about and put it on there over night, I didn't want it to get irritated or bleed again. I took her to the vet the next day and the nail had fallen all the way off in the gauze and it was just fine. She said we did the right thing by wrapping it. She said I shouldn't have to wrap it any more, b/c the nail had fallen off and was healing up.
Just keep an eye on it that it doesn't bleed too much. I would put some more cornstarch on it and wrap his little paw if need be, he should be ok. Hope I could help!

Little late, but cornstarch works as a styptic powder when one is not available, but isn't as effective. You may want to wrap the paw with some self-adhesive (sticks to itself) wrap over some gauze. This will apply gentle pressure and help it clot. Make sure to take this off after about 12 hrs. If it continues to bleed, take it into your local ER vet and have them cauterize it and wrap it.

Yes Steph, thank you!! That's the self-adhesive tape I was trying to think of! That sounds just like what we got for Jazzy.
Oh really, the cornstarch isn't as effective? I had no idea! I only use the syptic powder, but have heard people say the cornstarch works, too. Thank you for letting us all know this, Steph!!
TBird, let us know how he is doing.
