Mirra does really well with me outside. We practice quite a bit.

With Jeff it's a different story! She knows she can take advantage of him because he doesn't make her mind. He gets mad when he tells her to come and then she looks at me like "Do I have to?!" He'll keep calling her and she won't come. I pipe up and say "Mirra, come" and she runs to me. It's pretty much the same for the rest of the commands. He gets irritated but I tell him he has to make her do what he says or else she'll never listen.

Sounds like she's a bit of a brat I'm so glad she's doing well, though. Keep up the good work, Mirra!

Well done both of you.
I would love Indy to go to a school but it would be too hard coz of the language difference.
Can dogs learn 2 languages?

I don't see why not. I've heard of a horse learning 150 commands in 3 different languages, so I don't think it would be any harder for a dog to learn.

If I remember correctly (I was ten when Lady went to puppy school) that you would tell them what to do you have to show them byt pressing down on their bum, making them lay down and do all that fun stuff) then give them a treat, I am sure thats what you do and i dont think the language barrier will be any differant

well you don't quite push them into position anymore but you do ease them into position, using treats to lure them where you want them. As long as you and the trainer can communicate you can definently teach a dog two languages! Biscuit's commands are all in English but half the time I just use a hand signal, I only use the word if she is being stubborn. Eg. to get her to sit I close my hand to a fist and raise my index finger. She sits. to get her to stop is for me to put my left hand up palm facing her, fingers extended towards the air. to get her to stay is the same signal, but with the right hand. If I take two steps sideways and run my hand in front of my body she runs and does a leap through the air etc. So technically she knows english and her version of sign language!

I think people dont give animals enough credit. Ladys sit signal is my right hand tapping my my left shoulder. down is pointing to the ground and stay is carmens stop signal high five is sticking my hand infront her paw but finger pointed up and shake is down. thats the extent my dog knows.

I saw a deaf family and there dogs knew signals it was soo cute!!! she was talkign to her dog in ASL

oh no Jane she leaps!! She can be very graceful!!! When she 'jumps' she looks like a baby elephant trying to land!!!

Sheryl it cost us $AU75 for 4 lessons (one hour each)...that was about $55-$60 US dollars. We do have classes here that are $5.00 for one hour and you just turn up and pay.

Sheryl, Kirby knows Finnish and English and has even picked up on some of the hand signals I've taught Seamus. So yes, dogs can learn two different languages, depending on how smart the dog is. In Seamus' case, he does good to remember ENGLISH, let alone the Finnish. But if you work at it, they can learn both.

I will look into them then but Sweden is so expensive so I am imagining them to cost me about $50 a time

It costs $60 for 6 weeks for Mirra and I to go to class. I've had dogs since I was a kid and thought they weren't going to teach me anything I didn't already know. I've trained alot of dogs (even did a decent job training Riley hand signals if I do say so myself ). Boy, I was wrong. I've learned so much these last 3 weeks! I highly recommend taking dogs to obedience class!

As far as the language thing again.....we're teaching Mirra voice commands and hand signals like we used for Riley. It's sort of a habit now. Since we're seriously considering getting another deaf pup, I think it would be a good idea for Mirra to learn both.

I agree Rhonda, when I took Biscuit I took her to learn clicker training but apart from that didn't think I'd learn anything new!! I was way wrong too!!!! I'd always go to obedience classes for any puppy!

And a new puppy??? Is this one coming soon??????
